Why are people dismissive of things that are unfamiliar

Instead, we get drawn into paint rollers

Did you use your paint roller?

For example.

Someone asks about calf cramp and I suggested looking at foam rollers.

They proceed to dismiss them as glorified, over priced, paint rollers.

Clearly they've no idea what they're talking about, so why not just say "no thanks", or maybe google it and find out what it is before saying no?

It makes you wonder why you bother. If I ask for advice, I do at least consider the advice I get, and look it up before deciding whether to try it or not!

I put it down to a (sadly) very common combination of ignorance and arrogance.

You find it even about the most trivial things, I mentioned to someone the other week that I watched a film which turned out to be really good (IMO), the brief conversation went as such;

Him: 'I don't like space'

Me: 'You don't like space?'

Him: 'I don't like films about space, I don't watch em'

Me: 'So you mean, regardless of how good a film may be, you won't watch it simply because it's to do with space?'

Him: 'Yeah, just don't like space films, I won't watch em'

Me: 'Right'

He's since watched it several times, as he came upon it by accident on one of the Sky movie channels. He thinks it's great.
