Buying a ford capri - common faults?

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

So Ive wanted a Capri since i was about 12 and Ive finally got the money to afford one! Going to have a look at a 2.0 laser tomorrow.

Just wondering what main issues i should look out for? Obviously i know about rust and rot problems they have but any major mechanical issues that i should be wary of? Its a 2.0 pinto, manual, 70 odd thousand miles, Done a vehicle check and mileage etc all matches.

Searched online for general issues but i thought a local who's owned one may have more trustworthy insight :).

Cheers!

You might be best asking Motornutz, the club has lots of members with this sort of car. A quick google should get you there.

camshaft are known for wearing and getting a tapping noise

regular oil changes with good oil will help reduce wear

Apart from rot and not going round corners very well

engine and gearbox are normaly good if they have

been maintained.camshaft or worn cam followers are

not a big job to do.and a good rev to about 3000 rpm

when warm will let you know if the crank is ok.

On a test drive listen for whining from the back end

when lifting on and off the gas, sighn that the diff is

worn.

most parts still about if you look.

Good Luck.

Camshaft issues are because of oil feeder pipe which runs over the top of the camshaft.

The holes in the pipe are too small and become blocked.

I think you can get a modified pipe with larger holes or, do the mod yourself, but as Flynn says, the oil change bit is essential, same as any motor.

Well done, I have had two Capri's, apart from the "Oldest Swinger in Town " jokes I enjoyed them.

You know all the Capri downsides by the sound of it so eyes wide open just enjoy it.

Maybe join a club? the Ford clubs tent to be a bit "Anal" but Motornutz is a great club for all classics (they have a long standing affection for Fords though) So you won't go far wrong :)

I had a couple of capri's a many years ago, i had to replace the rear leaf springs on both cars & they can often snap without much warning !

And, yes... you will certainly learn a lot about car control, ..Try it in the snow next,:hihi: don't forget a couple of bags of sand in the back though, or it won't go far in the snow !
