paula4sheff 10 #2 Posted March 15, 2018 Hi , thinking of a family day out in Manchester on the train for my daughters 13th birthday as something different but is there much to do and is it expensive?? It’s April 7th and it’s for 2 adults and 3 kids Thanks There's loads to do - it's a massive city. What sort of thing did you have in mind? Is it expensive is a big question - again depends on what you want to do, and whereabouts in the city you go.
 Share this content via...
Annie Bynnol 612 #3 Posted March 15, 2018 (edited) If travelling by train, book ahead, reserve seats and catch the through train to/from Meadowhall. Otherwise you will have a very good chance of standing all the way there and back. Book now £48 (£27 with railcard*) return for the group booking now on a specific reserved train there and back. On line eg East Midlands train site or at Sheffield or Meadowhall Stations. These fares will go up. Do not use Trainline £72(£39 with railcard*) any time there and back- you can reserve seats if you want, buy online or on the day. *Buy a Family and Friends Rail Card at £30 valid for a year- check for offers. Manchester City v United on that day at 17 30 Edited March 15, 2018 by Annie Bynnol
 Share this content via...
kevvy 12 #4 Posted March 16, 2018 The Manchester Museum of Science and Industry is excellent. Our Grandkids loved it. It's about 10 minutes from Oxford Street Station.
 Share this content via...
Geo-atkinson 10 #5 Posted March 16, 2018 The Manchester Museum of Science and Industry is excellent. Our Grandkids loved it. It's about 10 minutes from Oxford Street Station. Second that, or the Lowrey Centre. The guided tour of the gallery is free (or was) and there is loads of shops. If your kids were smaller there's Legoland but thats a bit pricey. alchresearch 214 #6 Posted March 16, 2018 Manchester Museum (near university) and Imperial War Museum are two other good ones, and URBIS.
 Share this content via...
Geo-atkinson 10 #7 Posted March 16, 2018 In all honesty, if you are taking teenage girls it will take you all day to get around all the shops. Personally l like to visit all five Wetherspoons in the city centre..... Don't remember much after that.
 Share this content via...

Manchester City v United on that day at 17 30 If you are prepared to use the slow train, an off peak day return Sheffield to Grindleford for the group, plus an off peak day return from Grindleford to Piccadilly comes in at £48 too. Giving you flexibility to go and come back when you wish. Obviously cheaper with a railcard. ETA: Sorry, thought you said two kids. For three, the combined day return is £55, which might still be worth thinking about. Edited March 16, 2018 by Naive
 Share this content via...
paula4sheff 10 #10 Posted March 16, 2018 The Greater Manchester Marathon is on April 8th. Why don't you all run that? That would make you all sleep well at night.
 Share this content via...
