R.I.P Sir Roger Bannister.

I don’t think that he ever considered himself to be special, or that he had done anything special, this is exactly why he was so special.

kind of lucky. A runner not a racer. He didn't actually like running against hungry athletes, that wanted to beat him in open competition and he resigned early. He didn't like competition. A marvellous articulate man of course. RIP.

... but he did go on to beat the new sub-4-minute record holder John Landy at the Commonwealth Games. That must have been one hell of a race.
