And this year there will be a special emphasis on involving the wider community in the event. The Sheffield Connection is a voluntary student project aiming to improve relations between non-students and students in the residential areas surrounding the University of Sheffield. Their special free celebration of World Music will be situated in The Piazza, the new outdoor space created at the Students’ union building in Western Bank as part of the Student Union renovations. Running from 12 noon to 4pm, the program will include a diverse range of performances from around the world, spanning different continents and cultures with also a selection of local acoustic performers. Aside from the main World Music stage, Sheffield Connection will be hosting a selection of family friendly interactive stalls, including origami sessions by the university’s Papercraft Society, instrumental workshops run by the Indonesian Society, world flag face painting and a smoothie making bike! Inside the Union building, there will be a cinema screening of Disney’s animated hit Frozen, with tickets available at just £2.50 at Students’ Union Box Office. Contours Festival is a new music festival organised entirely by student volunteers at The University of Sheffield. Open to non-students, and featuring artists of all genres from Sheffield and beyond, the Festival will this year raise money for city charity Sheffield Young Carers. Contours stages include The SU Gardens, Studio, The Great Gatsby bar and Fez Club. “We anticipate that our World Music stage will bring together cultures and communities in celebration of this unique city,” said Sheffield Connection representative Emma Wray. “In the long term, we hope that the community will see the benefits the Union can offer to everyone, creating a more integrated Union.” For more information and the running order for the World Music Stage visit our Facebook page by searching Sheffield Connections’ World Music Stage!
