US Goverment Makeup -v-uk

Recommended Posts

Didn't realize how small the elected office of the US is: 100 in the Senate and 435 in the House or Representatives. We have 800 in the Lords "not elected" and 650 MP's elected, given the the US representatives is only a 2 year term, so very representative of the peoples opinion. With the and again the elected Senate term of 6 years. The question is and the UK is the size of some states in the US. Why do we have 1450 people at present, while they have 550?

Because no one dare question the "establishment" that's why. 40 or 50 "Lords" would be ample. As for the number of MP's, 100 or so would be sufficient. But like the corrupt EU, Turkey's don't vote for Christmas do they.

Because State Governors and legislatures have much more power to make laws and raise taxes in the USA than local government does in the UK - we are much more centralised than the USA.

Not really - that would be like devolving some powers to Alaska and Hawaii but not to the rest of states in the USA.

My point is we are the size of a large state in the US, yet have 3 times the elected and none elected governing us

You're ignoring the size of the states' legislatures (and our devolved bits too to be fair).

Uneducated and ill informed drivel. Each state is governed by its own respective elected upper and lower houses along with the executive which includes the governorship. Your attempt to draw parallels with the UK is laughable.

We are as big as the two largest states in the USA, California and Texas, put together.

But you're comparing chalk and cheese. You might like to read about the government of Texas for example - it has 254 county governments and 1,209 municipal (town / city) governments to start with!
