Campaign to Save Birley Spa

Recommended Posts

The Friends of Birley Spa are currently working flat out to try and save the Birley Spa Bath House from being sold at auction in September.

This historic building has been neglected for many years, and due to the councils need to find money to fill the hole in the budget due to government cuts, they have decided to sell.

As well as lobbying the council to suspend or delay the sale, they have started a crowdfunder to raise money to fund a possible community purchase/takeover. So far the council has refused to budge, but Clive Betts MP is trying to persuade them to change their minds.

You can donate a minimum of £10 in exchange for membership and a vote in a future cooperatively owned Birley Spa here:

Have they got it listed as an Asset of Community Value?

They are working on an application. Of course, in this instance the asset is owned by the council, so its hard to see why they would agree to putting a six month restraining order on themselves

really? maybe in your little world, Birley Spa could be a really good development very unique in fact ask yourself why hasnt the council done something by now?? either leased it to a business or developed it themselves for the good of the city....lazy thats why and now after all these years it looks like its going to be sold all of a sudden people are interested!!

Hmmm...

... well according to the JustGiving page, "regardless of the amount you pay, you will be guaranteed the same voting rights as other members".

I've never really understood the thinking behind that idea, and it's probably what is putting a lot of people off from contributing more.

For example, if someone was to donate the remaining £69,470 and thereby "save" the building, why should they only have the same say as someone who has donated the minimum fee of £10?

It makes no sense...

£70,000 wont save the building.

Talk about going all the way to Rome, Pompei, ect . To see Roman History. what we have a proper Roman Bath House here. At one time before it was neglected you could see the Mosaic Tiles on one of the external baths. Get Tony Robinson and his Time Team to get on the Job, I reckon itll be a worth while dig.:help:

Birley Spa was underused and in a bad state during the '70's when everyone wanted new and shiney and didn't care about historical value, just like the canals and waterways.

As a consequence apart from those local it may as well not ever have existed except for the hall for karate and dancing lessons.

It would be a pity to loose it from a historical perspective.
