There's nowt Highland about the Highland Fling

Recommended Posts

What is it with Sheffield city council, why can't they do anything properly? They have always failed in previous years to put on a proper highland fling, last year they at least made a bit of an effort to hire a couple of experienced pipers and highland games. This year I'm told there is going to be neither although I'm not sure about the highland games (but they're not advertising them). It also appears that the event has been put in the hands of Green City Action. These guys organise multicultural hippie festivals like the Burngreave festival! They do a semi decent job of it but what on earth do they know about organising highland flings? All they've said to sell it this year is it's going to be the best one yet? Well what else can they say, they're adding nothing new. It's all about the same old traders!

There are two large highland flings in Derbyshire, the Ashbourne Highland Gathering and The Chatsworth Country fair. The Sheffield City Council should look to these gatherings and learn a thing or two because they put our fling to shame. A highland fling is never just about falconry displays, cattle shows, showing off dogs and horses, nor is it just about a marquee full of people selling anything but Scottish related goods. It's about mass pipe band competitions, solo piping competitions, highland dancing, ceilidh's and proper well organised highland games. Take it from someone whose spent 5 years competing in them all across the country and Scotland.

We have the land, we have the money (especially now that they're getting away with charging people to get into this con of an event) so why the hell can't we get professional organisers on board to give Sheffield a proper highland gathering and something that can match or give Ashbourne and Chatsworth a run for it's money. At the moment the fling is nothing more than an embarrassment to Scotland.

Green City Action are also doing the two day event 'Green City Days' in Middlewood Park. The event organiser has a vast experience and knowledge of putting on events and shows nationally.

Hows about giving GCA a chance to show they can do things differently?

Yes I know Bob Worm and he does have a lot of experience in organising festivals but let's see how much he's researched about highland flings. I imagine he's just going to keep the Sheffield fling running smoothly in the false tradition that it always has.

If it was Green City Action (though it might have been the Council) that organised last year's Environmental Fair (or Festival) last year it was a huge disappointment in fact you could say flop. There were not that many stalls, there were a large number of funfair rides, no activities (races, games etc) and lots of junk food stalls. The Totley Festival was a far better environmental event with 26 environmental organisations and 25 stalls. And that was just organised by local people.
