Crystal Peaks Market heating problems

In these austere times where the council is having to make hard decisions about which service is next to have its funding cut, I find we council taxpayers of the city are once again funding private enterprise to the tune of £200,000.

Why did the council not pass on the cost of this heating to the traders? Do the traders pass all of their profits back to the council? Aren’t markets supposed to be out in the cold anyway?

It’s time this madness stopped. Having one massively subsidised market hall in this town is enough. If markets can’t pay their way then it’s time to call it a bad job and move on, people moan about Tesco but at least they don’t ask the council for a new boiler, toilets, etc!

When you rent a space, house, office or whatever you do so on the understanding that it's fit for purpose/habitation. The market is no different, the traders pay for the space and the landlord has a duty to maintain it.

Now retired, I was a trader in the old castle fish & meat market when the "Public Market" was originally there as a service to the public of Sheffield, it was in the 60's & 70's a council non profit making Public service...the rents then were set so the traders could sell their produce very low prices so the Public would Benefit...This made the Markets very busy back then...Too busy to notice any cold in the winter, but it did get far too warm in the summer..& I remember it being too much trouble every summer for the idol council worker within the markets to open the windows.. they were to busy sitting on their arrases doing nowt.

Re-investment by the council were purposely avoided their plan wads to run it down hoping that all the traders would eventually go bust, but that did not happen so they had no option but to build a new market, A Big very expensive Mistake The Markets in Sheffield now are No Longer "Public Markets" their overheads are far too high now to be able to sell their produce as competitively as before, typical of a new age local councils "useless"... they have ruined the city centre.

The Giant Supermarkets & large Shopping Malls are now ripping people off, if you will let them...So its good job there is the likes of Aldi & Lidl now where we can all get a reasonable deal
