When the penny finally dropped that they serve no purpose?

Probably about the same time officials stopped bothering about where the ball should be placed at a corner. Apparently rule 17 of the FA rules states: 'The ball must be placed IN the corner area.'

To me that's not on the quadrant line or just touching a bit of whitewashed blade of grass.

IN the corner area means the ball can be on the outside of the line just as a ball on the outside of the touch line is IN the field of play. Ask any linesman.

Don't you mean Assistant Referee?

BTW has anyone noticed at the World Cup that the AR's don't flag for offside until the player in an offside position plays the ball, even if they've chased the ball 20 or 30 yards.

Not just the World Cup, it's been happening everywhere for the last couple of seasons.

The lines are in the area defined, so the edge of the line is the edge of the area.
