Sheffield University Spring 2009 Concert Season
Tuesday 28 April, 7.30pm
Sheffield University Firth Hall

Benjamin Frith (piano)

Mendelssohn: Songs without Words, Op. 67, Book 6
Beethoven: Sonata in C Sharp minor, Op. 27, No 2 (Moonlight)
Mendelssohn: Fantasy in F Sharp minor, Op. 28
Schumann: Fantasy in C, Op. 17

'Prodigy of Prodigies' was how Benjamin Frith was described by Dennis Matthews when, aged just fourteen, he won the Dudley National Concerto Competition. Since then, he has been a first prizewinner in the Rubinstein Piano Masters Competition, a prizewinner in the Mozart Memorial Competition, and was awarded top prize in the Busoni International Piano Competition.

Having achieved rave reviews from his American and Edinburgh Festival debuts, Frith established himself as an international concert artist. He has appeared with many of the world's finest orchestras including the Berlin Symphony, Israel Philharmonic, Polish National Radio, Halle, BBC Scottish, C.B.S.O, London Mozart Players, Royal Philharmonic and BBC Philharmonic; with such conductors as Zubin Mehta, Antoni Wit, Vasary, Skrowaczewski, Bamert, Atzmon, Barry Wordsworth and Gianandrea Noseda.

His exciting and diverse repertoire ranges from Scarlatti to James Macmillan (whose Piano Sonata Frith performed at the Barbican Centre, London, live on Radio 3 as part of the 2005 Macmillan celebration) and includes over fifty concertos, and much praise has been bestowed on Frith’s recordings

Our evening concerts are designed to be an informal, cost effective way to enjoy great classical and world music. Complimentary wine and refreshments are offered during the interval, as well as a free programme. Free parking is available in Durham Road car park, behind the Octagon Centre.

Tickets: £8, £5 (concessions), £2.50 (students/unwaged)
