William Henry Smith

Recommended Posts

Hi

Probably a long shot but I am looking for information about my Great Grandfather William Henry Smith born abt 1882.

I don’t think he was born in Sheffield, he married a Florence Poole from Crewe and they lived in Sheffield.

They had serveral children together, one being my Grandfather William Henry born 1902-1976.

He married Edith Horsfield and they had two children Joan and John. I think Edith passed away and then he married my Grandmother, also Edith (maiden name Littlewood).

They had Lilian, William (Billy) and my Dad, Robert.

My Grandparent was widow of Thomas Marsden, and together that had Barry and Carol.

Any information would be brilliant. Thanks, Rachel

Hi Rachel,

1901 census - 39 Melton Street, Brightside, Sheffield.

William Hy. Smith, 19yrs, Firewood worker (chopper).

Robert Smith, 11yrs.

Stephen Smith 7yrs.

John Henry Bagshaw, grandson, 13yrs, Firewood worker.

Children all born Sheffield.

In 1891 the the family are still at 39 Melton Street.

1881 census - 171 Alfred Road, Sheffield.

Frederick Smith, 33yrs, Labourer iron works, born Manchester.

Hannah Smith, wife, 35yrs, born Stavely, Dby.

Julia H. Bagshaw, step dau, 15yrs.

Charles Smith, son, 5yrs. Children all born Sheffield.

On FreeBMD, there is a marriage in the June quarter of 1872 in Sheffield, between

Frederick Smith and Hannah Bagshaw. The marriage is not online and it might be worth

ordering a copy to find out the name of Frederick's father.

On the 1871 census, Hannah Bagshaw is with her husband Henry Wilson Bagshaw.

Henry dies in Dec 1871 and is buried in Burngreave Cemetery.

Hannah Broadhead married Henry Wilson Bagshaw, 16 Feb 1862 at Sheffield Parish Church. No father's name is given for Hannah.

'

If You go to the 'Sheffield Indexers' site and use parish burials and enter

Henry Wilson Bagshaw, and then 'find similar in same grave', there are four Smith

burials as well.

1939 register - 90 Coleford, Sheffield.

William H Smith, D.O.B. 25 Jan 1882, Steel rolling examiner, married.

Florence Smith, D.O.B. 10 Jun 1884, domestic duties, married.

Joyce Mary Smith (Booth), D.O.B. 25 Jan 1925, Errand girl (cutlery), single.
