Seem to remember another grocers called Gallons, I think they had a few shops around the city.

Thanks for the photo's Zakes, the bus timetables might come in useful as well.

Yes they did, I worked there as a delivery lad 1961-62 at Gowers & Burgons-Lyons Street/Petre Street in Pitsmoor.

Bit of reminiscing please !

Let's have the location of all the Gowers shops.

Was there one on Abbeydale Road junc Chippinghouse Road ?

On the corner of Washington Road and Sharrow Lane, was that Gowers or Gallons ?

My memory is getting confused here i.e. Wasn't there a chain of shops called Gower and Burgon ?

Yes there was, Gowers and Burgon's merged in perhaps late 1961 or early 1962.

If you look up to the top of the corner you can still see the "Gowers the grocer" sign. Every time I pass I have a look.

The shop at 451 Firth Park Road was a branch of Burgons from the 1930s until c. 1962 when the two firms amalgamated, then it was Gowers & Burgons. Here is a scan from the 1974 Kelly's Directory with a list of Gowers & Burgons branches.

There wereat least two Gowers locations in Heeley from 1945 to 1960. Near Anns Rd school!

One at Forster Road and Boyton Street, and a later location (moved?) a block away at Gleadless Road and Forster Road!

I remember the polite gentleman behind the counter, "Thank you very much obliged!"

Also remember other general groceries in the area, Maltby's, Poulter's, Hurst's, Unwins, Cuttles, Spencer's, Med's (Mead's?). Memmots, Crowsers, Flears, Bullaces, Websters.

Most took t' tick until you ran out of credit and had to go a little further afield 'til Friday!
