Margaret Thatcher would recoil at today's inequality.

Recommended Posts

Margaret Thatcher said this;

Now, you make the point about minimum income. I think in societies where there are enormous differences between very great wealth and very great poverty, I would recoil from that. (I would recoil) from enormous differences between very great wealth in the presence of very great poverty.

So there is therefore something to be said for a certain amount of redistribution, from taxation. And this is what taxation is about...so you do do (sic) a certain amount of redistribution from those to try to help people who are poverty stricken, to get up off the floor and raise their standards. And we would call that a basic safety net.

And we would accept a basic moral commitment, in a society like yours or ours, that jointly we do try to guarantee some basic standard of life, and indeed rather more than a basic standard of life. But there are certain benefits you can get from social security, and we both agree on that.

It can be seen in the following video from 10:30;

She goes on to mention the lowest earners earn half average income, and the highest earners earn some 4 times average income and that this was in fact lower than in the Soviet Union. (At the time of interview).

Fast forward 30+ years and we find ourselves in a situation where we do have an enormous difference in very great wealth and very great poverty.

The highest earners can now earn many hundreds times the average income, and the poorest people are denied income via the inhuman sanctioning regime. Millions now rely on foodbanks and cannot afford to heat, eat, and even bathe.

Far from guaranteeing rather more than a basic standard of life, the social security system no longer guarantees even the most basic standard of life. The unemployed find they are not even guaranteed the basic standard of life guaranteed to even the most repugnant criminals.

If Thatcher was in office today, she would recoil in horror at the inequality and she would argue for greater taxes on the rich and increased redistribution of income to the poorest, in order to guarantee the poorest a basic standard of life, and indeed rather more than a basic standard of life.

Perhaps enough to allow the poor to occasionally frequent pubs as they did for many many centuries, and thus we would have many more pubs than we find in the UK today, after many years of enormous differences between very great wealth and very great poverty.

Many on this forum would label Thatcher a Marxist, Communist or a Socialist, they would call her a 'Leftie' and lament her use of the term the 'rich get rich and the poor get poorer', because she would use this and argue for the rich to become richer and the poor to become richer too.

It's thanks to her and her gov that this country no longer has enough council homes, hense the bedroom tax we now have. Which is a reason so many have taken their own lives rather than live on the streets when they can't afford to pay it out of their £72 per week and get evicted. Just so some freeloader from the EU can have their homes.

Nor do we have any mining, steel or ship-building jobs thanks to her. She was the start of the rot.

Thatcher was a Tory. A dishonest uncaring money centred bitch who cost this country mainly in the north so much pain its unreal.

She was such a bitch that she sent the task force to the Falklands only because her popularity was so low at the time. Had she been riding high in the poles im confident she would have left the Falklanders to rot. She was a vile women.

Do you rally think we shouldn't have defended the Falklands? What message would that send to the international community? "Invade our lands and we won't do anything".

Sour country gained massively. Some local communities were negatively impacted, but overall we benefitted and our economy grew mass Ely, both in real times and relative to our peers.

It was the unions who devastated the north.

Never voted Tory in my life. Why not debate the points I raised instead of being immature.
