Reliant Rialto the fuse on one of the circuits blows as soon as I put the ignition on, the circuit includes the indicators,heater,wiper motor and instrument gauges

First check, make sure all systems on that fuse are switched off.

Then using a test lead brush across the blowing fuse holder don't make a firm contact, if you get a strong flash disconnect each circuit one at a time till the flashing stops. if you get no initial strong flash turn on the circuits one at a time until you do. once you have identified the circuit at fault you are half way there.

Sorry but I am as thick as two planks when it comes to electricts how would I rig a test lead up

As a basic Test Lead just a length of wire with the insulation stripped off the ends (if you're going to use it to brush across the terminals as has been suggested). A better option would be a Circuit Tester / Test Light. Most Car Spares shops would have one.
