smary   14 #1 Posted October 5, 2018 My friends new laptop has arrived without a cd drive. Can we use the old laptop to act as a cd drive so that we can put her software onto the new laptop. Also will a 8 gb flashdrive be big enough to make a recovery disc
 Share this content via...
pearlt072 Â Â 10 #2 Posted October 5, 2018 Not as such, well not easily anyways. Best bet would be to either buy a USB DVD-ROM drive. Or insert the disk in old laptop, copy contents of CD to flash drive, then transfer across to new one.
 Share this content via...

Mikes10   10 #4 Posted October 5, 2018 You could try sharing the DVD drive of the computer on the network, I've never tried it so I don't know what problems you may encounter. Thus you have the old computer and new computer connected to the network instructions on the following link  https://kb.wisc.edu/page.php?id=13067   Instructions for creating a USB recovery drive ( by HP ), min requirement 8GB:  https://support.hp.com/lamerica_nsc_carib-en/document/c04641788
 Share this content via...
woodview   10 #5 Posted October 5, 2018 Could end up very tricky. You can get usb cd drives fir about £20 , might be easiest.
 Share this content via...
swarfendor437   14 #6 Posted October 5, 2018 I think Mikes10 solution is the most straightforward one (and cost effective too!). In respect of using a Flash disk, if this is in respect of putting old software on the new Notebook, will it be compatible with Windows 10? If it is a CD then an 8 Gb Flash drive is more than enough, BUT there could be protection software on the CD to prevent such shenanigans … Back to Mikes10 solution.
