Upvc window advice

Recommended Posts

Guest makapaka

Hi - I wondered if anyone could offer some advice / recommend a tradesman?

We have recently moved house and all the windows have upvc double glazing and are in good condition, however the previous owners have had leaded glass put in to the two front bay windows which we don't like.

I wondered if anyone could advise if it would be possible for us to change each of the window panes to plain glass using the existing window frames and if so recommend someone who could do it?

Thanks in advance.

It's not that hard to change them yourself, the glass is held in by 4 beads, prize off with a thin, stiff bladed tool, like a 1" scrapper, measure the existing piece of glass, including the thickness, noting the colour of the spacer bar (Usually silver, gold, white or black) get your glass sizes to a local glass/window merchant, then replace glass, knock beads back on, job done! Failing that try Vision windows..

You've probably already sorted this now, but I'd check with Central Glass (they're now owned by Sheffield Window Centre). They'll be able to advise on if you can use the glass change to improve your energy efficiency by putting in better spacer bars and the like. If you're spending the money anyway, you may as well see it as an investment to save more cash longer term.
