RIP Brian Aldiss

Recommended Posts

One of the UKs best known science fiction writers, Brian Aldiss, has died just after his birthday at the age of 92. He was one of the leading lights of the New Wave movement in the late 60s and early 70s along with J.G. Ballard and Michael Moorcock.

Perhaps BARRY Aldis,( 'you're D.J. B.A.') an Australian who was on Radio Luxembourg and later BBC Radio all those years ago ?

There was a lecturer at Stannington College Called Mr Aldis, that's the only time I have heard the surname before, maybe Credissa went there ?

In fact the only reason I clicked into this thread was to see if it were him.

Brian Aldis wrote the book Frankenstein Unbound, on which the film of the same name was based and the short story Super-Toys

Last All Summer Long, on which the film AI Artificial Intelligence was loosely based.

my parents knew him and his wife, who like my dad did in the 1960s, worked on the Oxford Mail newspaper and I think they lived close by to each other a few streets apart in Oxford. They used to socialise together sometimes - before I was born.

growing up, there were a number of his books lying around the house that I did try to read, and he was sometimes mentioned, so his name is quite familiar to me, but the books just didn't float my boat although I knew that in his field he had quite a high reputation. Science Fiction is not my cup of tea at all.

I may have heard of him but doesn't ring a bell now. It was sad to hear that he passes away.
