With a few exceptions they've always attracted mediocre performers and end of the pier routines from has beens. I recall watching a Jonathan Dimbleby documentary about Prince Charles in the 1990s, and when his secretary reminded him that he was to attend a Royal Variety performance, his face dropped and muttered 'oh God!"
