We know that Sheffield can't sustain top-end fine dining, but even the burger chains are taking a dive now!

Can anyone make a success out of serving food to the Sheffield public - apart from the cheap eateries on London Road and such like?

Pizza express closing sites.

Saturation of options. Rising costs including ingredients, rents and national living wage. Along with the pressure of rising business rates.

Hundreds of millions poured in from Private equity firms from 2011 on, but the return just wasn't what they expected as things changed. Take Pizza Express it was sold for £900 million but only made profit of 40 million last year, they aren't going to wait 22 years to get their cash back!

Byron expanded rapidly, Pizza Express kept adding, [as did] Nando’s and Zizzi. There has been huge growth in the casual dining market and there are just too many restaurants. Simultaneously, food costs, staff costs, rents and business rates have all gone up. If you’re operating 100 sites, your margins are being squeezed and squeezed. And times are tough. Even if they spend a little more when they do, people are eating out less. So there are greater costs, more competition, fewer people and, consequently, the **** is hitting the fan.”

Maybe it's nothing to do with the people of Sheffield, and more that it wasn't actually all that good?

We were talking at work the other day about how many food places have stood the test of time in Sheffield, the only one I could think of was Mama's and Leonie's, been going since the 60's. Anyone think of any more???

Has Mama's and Leonie's -same owners on Norfolk Street- been there since the 60's, I think later. However, Butler's that used to on Brook Hill could have given them all a run for their money,for being in one place for a long time.

Chinese restaurants, Candytown, London Rd & Wong Ting, Matida St have been around for years.

Came to Sheffield in 1990, and the second night we went to Candytown. Nonna's did not exist (opened around 1995-1996).

There was a gorgeous restaurant in West Street, called Neptune's - run by Richard Smith. Closed within a year, and he went downmarket with Artisan in Crosspool and then Thyme (only one to survive).
