History of pub landlords Worksop Road & Broomhill Tavern

Recommended Posts

Hello, can anyone confirm that a Charles Johnson was the landlord of the Broomhill Tavern in Sheffield, around late 1800´s. Or of any Johnsons being pub landlords in Sheffield up to the 1960´s

Also we think he was the landlord of a pub on Worksop Road but do not know the name of it.

Any information would help, thanks in advance

The 1901 White's Directory shows Charles Johnson as licensee of the Broomhill Tavern at 484 Glossop Road. The 1901 census cofirms this - Charles Johnson, age 43, his wife Annie, 45 and eight children were at that address. The 1911 White's Directory shows Mrs Annie Johnson as publican at the Broomhil Tavern and the 1911 census shows her there as a "widow".

Moirahyde, thank you. We are not based in the UK which makes researching so much more difficult.

The Charles and Annie Johnson in the 1891 census return shown above are actually a different couple. Their ages don't agree with other census and death index data, and the 1901 census shows this Annie, now widowed, still at 44 Bridgefield Road with her father-in-law John H. Johnson and children. The Charles and Annie that we are looking for turn up in the 1891 census at the Wellington Hotel, 90 Wellington Street. They proved hard to find at first as there is a slight disparity in their ages compared with 1901 (they are shown as being 35 and 36, rather than 33 and 35) but their children Marian, Percy, Nellie, Bertha and Gilbert are all there with their correct ages for 1891. Here are scans (with some extraneous marks removed) of the relevant data from the 1891 census and the 1901 census.

Thanks Hilsbro, agree that the Charles and Annie Johnson 1891 census are a different family, especially as John H Johnson was born in Lincolnshire. Where in Sheffield is Wellington Road, is it anywhere near Darnell ?

We have been told the Johnson family in Attercliffe apparently goes back to the 14th century. This was discovered by a cousin who met the Vicar of Attercliffe Church organising the centenary of the Attercliffe Church (behind William and Glyn's bank as was) in 1981

Hi pitsmoor boy - Wellington Street is near the city centre, between Cambridge Street and Fitzwiliam Street. I think the Wellington Hotel fell victim to the 1940 Blitz, and the "Picturesheffield" site does not seem to have a photo, but here are two .links to photos of the Broomhill Tavern.

Charles and Annie turn up in the 1881 census at 15 St Philip's Road, Charles being a "Fer®ule Manufacturer" (in 1891 he was a "Ferrule Maker & Publican").
