Are you left wing

Are you right wing

Are you in the center

The Conservative are on the right, but yet they are in control of the country on 24% of the electorate.

There are the Greens and other small parties in the left. What would make someone a leftie? I will leave that to you.

Those on the left may support:

social welfare programs unemployment benefits)

higher, or more "progressive" taxes to pay for social programs

environmentalism and green initiatives

strong trade unions and industry regulations

social change or social justice to create equality

stronger national government

Those on the right may support:

strong moral and religious values

belief that charities, churches, and communities should provide social welfare, not the government.

lower taxation to cut government interference

limiting the scope of government

the strength of free-market capitalism

reducing regulations on industry and business

As pointed out, left and right is a dead concept (It has been since the end of WWII).

There are many political factors that people base their opinion on, merely using contrasts between these and grouping them together in two (three if you count centrist) groups is the best way to make people feel disconnected.

The headline in the Spectator today "What Labour needs now is a takeover by real left-wing radicals".

The headline in the Spectator today "What Labour needs now is a takeover by real left-wing radicals".

Why does it?

And what's the difference between a real left wing radical and an unreal one?

I think left and right, politically, are outdated concepts. Dating back to the French Revolution I believe.

If I had to define myself in a broad brush way politically, which I'm loathe to do, then I'd say I'm social democratic.

Unfortunately when people are pigeon holed, assumptions tend to be made, which are wrong and not reflective of what you believe.

left wing

noun

noun: left wing; plural noun: left wings; noun: leftwing; plural noun: leftwings

1.

the radical, reforming, or socialist section of a political party or system.

That definition explains exactly why it is a dead concept, let me illustrate with the last two governments - both radically reformed the nation, but Cameron 1 and 2 were most definitely not socialist. Yet Cameron talked about Big Society, which as a concept is inherently socialist (love thy neighbour).

A political party/government/country can be differentiated from other political parties/governments/countries on so many different planes and axis now that it is silly to talk of left and right wing.

If we talk about Corbynites versus Blairites than the key difference is:

Increased state interference vs increased market-forces

Politicians could do a much better job talking about all the different factors involved.

let me describe my personal political profile as an example:

  • Every person counts

  • I am for an open market and competition

  • I am an international federalist

  • I am anti-interventionist in foreign affairs

  • I believe defence budgets, especially nuclear weapons, should be lowered globally and armies eventually made obsolete, to be replaced with:
  • I am for a global approach towards intelligence and public safety

  • I am for a global ecological strategy - including food/fishing

  • I belief in full representation of the population
  • I belief people have a duty to represent themselves and that corporations should have a democratic factor (workforce representation)
  • I believe fully democratic corporations should be absolved from government interference
  • I am generally against government intervention in the workplace
  • But I am for standardisation of working hours and health and safety regulations
  • I am for high level education
  • I believe healthcare should have a cost to people
  • I am against high taxes

Now you tell me, am I right or left wing?

Or perhaps the left and right wing analogy is complete and utter dogs-biscuits.
