Plan for a BIOMASS BOILER in s6

Recommended Posts

MHH BIOMASSS LIMITED

The company named above is proposing installing a biomass boiler into an existing farm building at Prospect Farm Kirk edge Road Sheffield S6 6LJ for the purpose of drying Aggregates to supply the construction industry.

THIS LOCATED JUST 1,600 METERS FROM WORRALL AND ONLY 1,350 METERS FROM BRADFIELD SCHOOL and would be the main route in for any Heavy goods deliveries to and from Prospect Farm

This Biomass boiler will burn recycled woodchip and produce heat to dry aggregates to supply the construction industry. This will be conducted on a drying floor that will be located within a warehouse. The biomass boiler will is expected to operate for 6,570 hours per year burning 250kg/hour of wood chip.

The wood chip is going to have to be transported to the site and any waste ash produced removed from the site on heavy goods vehicles also the aggregates that are to be dried will have to be imported to site for drying then exported from site for sale into the construction industry, this is going to considerably increase the traffic travelling up through Wadsley, Worrall and Kirk Edge rd. There are no working hours in the application so we can only assume this will be a seven day a week process possibly being 24 hours a day

The companies address is

MHH Biomass Ltd, Carlisle St, East Sheffield S4 8DT, also based at this address is MHH Contracting who's company directors are also company directors of MHH Biomass who were recently featured on BBC1 INSIDE OUT PROGRAMME

Below is from MHH environmental risk assessment on their planning application

3.2 IDENTIFICATION OF HAZARDS

3.2.1 Potential hazards from the proposed activities are identified as:

ATMOSPHERIC EMISSIONS of particular matter, OXIDES OF NITROGEN, ORGANIC COMPOUNDS & CARBON MONOXIDE

ADMISSIONS OF SMOKE

NOISE AND VIBRATIONS FROM DELIVERY VEHICLES and operation the boiler and drying floor.

DUST EMISSIONS from handling and storage of woodchip, operation of the drying floor and ash handling.

CONTAMINATED FEEDSTOCK producing polluting emissions

BOILER BREAKDOWN OR MALFUNCTION causing emissions above the specified emissions limits

FIRE IN THE WOODCHIP STORE caused accidentally or by arson

ODOUR IS NOT CONSIDERED TO BE A HAZARD as there are no sources of odour identified. RECYCLED WOODCHIP IS NOT ODOURLESS.

The boiler has a registered clean air exemption certificate and does not produce a visible smoke plume, it may produce odour of wood smoke but this is not considered to be an offensive odour

MHH (it's The Hague family, Martin Hague, they own tippers and plant equiptment and a lot of land) were the subject of a story on Inside Out a few weeks ago, BBC1. They have applied for planning permission to use a large piece of land (currently fields) in Rotherham as a tip. The land in question borders onto football fields. There's been uproar over there - yet when the BBC contacted MHH they refused to be interviewed.

As all HGV traffic bound for Kirk Edge goes past my house, I shall be objecting - and I recommend anyone who lives on the route (Wadsley Lane, Worrall Road, Kirk Edge Road) to look at these plans themselves.

Those roads are not very well suited to HGV traffic.

The location is situated just outside the boundary for the Peak District national park as well.

I can see the peak district national park have been consulted but can't see what they have said??

I wonder who can possibly provide wood chip 24/7 ... the same disreputable company who charges a fortune for cutting trees down in the first place, wether they need felling or not?

With that families poor track record with fire safety it's a wonder they're even considering such a business venture.

Application is here

" 2.7.5 ... the boiler will require 42 tonnes of wood each week to operate continuously."

" 2.7.7 Woodchip will be delivered to the site in trailers with a capacity of up to 10 tonnes. There will be approximately 5 to 6 deliveries per week."

2.8.2 implies a production of as between 1.26 and 2.5 tonnes per week

" 2.8.3 Ash will be emptied from the ash box into a 1 tonne bag. When full the bag is stored inside the building and removed from site when 16 tonnes has accumulated, ie one full load.

What about the aggregates that the boiler is drying, they must require transporting to and from the site??

Martin Hague cares about Martin Hague , not local residents . If i lived in Worral i would be objecting strongly to this .

Why cant he build it done on his Carlisle St site where no one lives.

Do the aggregates not release some emissions?

Drying sand must release dust, water vapour and whatever crap is soaked into the sand?

I didn't realise the sand drying business was so lucrative

Very small scale development and the environmental assessment rates all of the potential impacts as "unlikely".

I wouldn't worry too much about this.

Is this the same Bradfield School that has a biomass burner itself, that burns woodchip and has deliveries two to three times a week at this time of year?

250 kg/hr probably corresponds to 2 or 3 wagons of wood per week, depending on the size of load. Although the quantity of aggregate may be a bigger issue, depending how much there is. 6000+ hours probably corresponds to 24 h/day, 5 days per week.
