Advice needed re 1st York & Lancaster Regiment

Recommended Posts

My father served in Suez Canal in the 1st York & Lancaster Regiment and I read in the Star back in May that Tony Etches, who served with my dad, got presented with a medal. How could I find out if my Dad is entitled to a medal too. I'm sure my Dad isn't interested but I know his grandkids would be so proud.

Thanks.

You can apply to the: Ministry of Defence

Defence Records 2b

Bourne Avenue

Hayes

Middlesex UB 1RF

for his military service record (it cost £25 in 1999). If he's still alive they will only disclose his record to him, unless he gives written permission, otherwise it will only be given to next of kin.

They should let you know if he was awarded any medals and how to obtain them.

After 50 years HM government decided to issue a General Service Medal for those who served in the Canal Zone from 1951 to 1954. Not quite sure about the first date but I'm sure the cut off date was 1954. I served in the York & Lancaster Regt. from 1953 to 1955 in Sudan and Egypt (Canal Zone) and received my GSM about a year ago. Try the websites below and good luck.

Miss Jones,

I was wondering if your dad was on this picture. It was taken in September 1953 at the end of training smoker, Pontefract Barracks.

My Dad was a bit later 1956 to 1958. Does this mean he will not qualify for the medal ?

Lovely picture.

I beieve the cut off date was 1954 but you can always apply, check this website. It looks as though your dad was there during the Suez Crisis in 1956.

Ref Tony Etches My Bro in law also served in Y & L and would dearly love to get in touch with him again. He often talks about him and what good times they had as mates. His name is Jack Nicholson from sheffield . Would be great if you could let us know how we can contact him. In hope Chic Billy.
