Wanting to make friends

Recommended Posts

My nephew moved to sheffield a year ago and is living in his own flat. He has cerebral palsy and likes to get out as much as possible. Keen on the gym but hasn't been able to make new friends. Tried one group but most of the people has severe learning dissabilities and didn't go out beyond the day centre. Any idea how he can make some mates or link in with others who have similar aspirations such as sport, going for a curry, attending ice hockey match

What area of the city is he in? He could try attending activities at one of the local forums - Parson Cross, Fox Hill, Southey Green, etc.

I just checked out the Parson Cross Forum and they have the following weekly session:

He lives in hillsbrough S6. Was hoping to make local friends so travel would be easier. Thanks for letting me know about this, we will definitely have a chat about it and get the map out. It sounds like the so of thing he's looking for.

Hi

If he's in Hillsborough then can he get to the gym independently? Both Hillsborough Leisure Centre and Zest on Upperthorpe (accessible from a tram stop) are very welcoming and Zest also has a pay as you feel cafe (run by the Real Junk Food Project) where he could stop for lunch after a gym or pool visit.

If he's up to do some learning then there's always places like the WEA who provide lots of courses for interest rather than passing exams, and their Sheffield learning centre is accessible from a number 69 bus stop and fully accessible inside (I used to teach there).

In my experience class members do go out and chat in breaks, make friends and meet elsewhere for wider socialising.

I hope that he finds his niche soon :)

Thanks for the suggestion. He tried hillsbrough centre but they weren't very helpful re his disability and one person told him to get direct payments and a personal assistant. He has found the Institute of Sport more helpful. We have looked at Zest and he's going to try their swimming sessions as they have great disabled access.

Please don't take it personally. I think it will probably be to do with insurance. A lot of places have trouble with this, especially if considered slightly dangerous,

(and Gyms will be classed as dangerous places by insurance companies, prone to accidents etc.)

Zest at Netherthorpe is a great place, a Community centre with lots going on and a great Gym, swimming pool, Library, group meeting place etc.
