Importing goods from a non-EU country

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Do you guys have any idea what the requirements of importing goods from a non-EU country are?

I am trying to find a person who has an experience in such a matter to give me some advices and also to ask him some questions.

Thanks

It really depends what you're getting, where from and how often.

In order to import goods from a non-EU country you must:

1. Be an outstanding member of the public with a clean criminal record

2. Be loyal to the European Union project and its ideologies

3. Obtain written consent from President of the European Union

Good luck

This is it really. Certain countries may have restrictions placed on them e.g. Iran. Other goods will be banned from importing, and others may have a limit on how many can be imported in one go.

Go on, entertain us and give us some more info!!

Depends on the size too. If it's something small and parcel-able your supplier and delivery company of their choice (urge them to use FedEx) sort it out and it's all straight forward. Not as straight forward as from an EU country, but easier.

You'll need a commodity code though. Try here for starters. https://www.gov.uk/starting-to-import/importing-from-noneu-countries

You'll be faced with the shipment getting stuck in customs for somewhere between a minute and a month, import duties, VAT and charges from your freight agents if they do the customs clearing for you.

You'll soon wish the whole world was in the Customs Union!

Once you've done it a number of times you'll get more accustomed to the hassle and learn where lower the third party charges and have the best chances of getting through customs.

This is why you never see any Chinese goods for sale.

Eh? At volume you'll be shipping by the container-load and using freight agents. The costs of the admin and customs get spread over a lot more units and become more tolerable.

However it seems rather more likely that the question is from someone who wants to ship a box or two, not a container.

To be fair we have no idea of the volume of goods the OP wants to import. Nor indeed what they are or where they are coming from, information that is needed in order to provide a definitive answer.

To answer the OP, I just call my shipping agent (well, email actually), tell them where the goods need picking up from and they do everything else.
