Recommend a good garage/mechanic in Sheffield - no advertising/jobs

Recommended Posts

Hi all

We are after some advice please :)

We need a dual fly wheel clutch fitting for our 2.2 Honda CRV

The prices we have been quoted vary quite a lot, so we are wanting a good reliable garage that will do a job, and won't rip us off

The garage needs to be near S12

Many thanks in advance Nichola

Hi, I need a mechanic that can plug in a mercedes sprinter to diagnose. I believe it is running in limp mode as it frequently won't run faster than 50 mph. I have had a couple of astronomical quotes for just plugging in and i wondered if anyone knew of a decent cheap mechanic or someone with the machine to read my van?? or can you buy the equipment to do it?? thanks

Bit of a long shot this...but have you checked to see if you have any bulbs out? I know, sounds ridiculous doesn't it? But a few years ago I was driving down the motorway in my Land Rover and I thought the engine sounded very noisy compared to usual. I was struggling to get up to 70mph and the rev counter was high. It was an auto box, but had the "tiptronic" type option, so I put it into manual mode and noticed that it was reading out as me being in 3rd, it wouldn't go any higher than 3rd.

I took it into the garage expecting something seriously wrong with it, but apparently I'd got a tail light out and that had put the car into "safety mode" or something! They replaced a bulb and it was back to normal again!

Worth checking if this is the cause before you spend a lot of money having it diagnosed?

I take my cars to Sytner Sheffield BMW

Hollis Croft, Broad Ln.

Great service.

It's good to hear that about a main dealer. I've used them in the past but I'm going back 20 years or so, when I used to drive a BMW and you had to have it serviced by the main dealer or lose the warranty. (That's not the case anymore - even with a new car you can take it wherever you want).

I would never use a main dealer again tbh. Not that they are necessarily bad, but they are more expensive and the way their work is structured is very different to independent garages. They allocate specific time slots to a job. So, say for example, you are taking your car in to have new discs and pads and new shock absorbers all round. They may allocate 1 hour to that job. If by the time the hour is up they've only done the discs and pads there's a chance they will stop right there and not complete the work. Because there are other jobs scheduled in for other vehicles.

I've had this happen many times in the past. "You'll need to book it in again for us to do those shock absorbers - we ran out of time today - the discs were rusted on" or something like that.

As I mentioned on here already, I take my car to one of the Tavern Garages (if it's something fairly basic that needs doing, or for MOT). If it was a more specialized job then I'd use an independent specialist for my make of car.

If you search for "independent xxx specialist" it should bring up a list of garages. (The "X's" represent the make of your car btw - don't type that into Google as typed here or you might come up with something very different! :o:o )

Nichola2, I used Hidi Garage just off Newhall road in Attercliffe for a Skoda Octavia. They converted the dual mass into a single mass at half the price Skoda wanted to charge. 07990821024 ask for chris. Been running it over six months now without any issues. Dual mass was an expensive way of doing something simple, car feels no different with solid flywheel and any subsequent clutch changes will be cheaper too. Most manufactures recommend changing the DMF every time a clutch is done.

To plug your sprinter in to dedicated scanner is about £45 ,would a normal code reader not read any faults .i.e a snap on type machine or sim alien ?
