Owl's young player's

Recommended Posts

Any one recall who was the last Owl's player to progress from the 'Junior' or 'reserve' team, or whatever it's called now, to play for the first team ? Joe Wildsmith and Cameron Dawson- both goalies and Sheffield born lads- and perhaps George Hirst-born Barnsley- but any one else ? (Dun't matter where they were born tho'.)

cant think of anyone else apart from the 3 above

Yes i remember a young lad , a 17 years old making his Wednesday debut in 2014.

A little blond hair lad Jack Stobbs , a right winger, who hails from Leeds. He's learning

his trade now at Port Vale on a season long loan.

He's a pacey winger that likes to take defenders on with great success.

Just like George Hirst he's been overlooked in not getting a run in the first team squad

by the coaching staff.

He's gone out on loan to gain league experience, surely that a natural progression???

'Jack Stobbs'! sounds like a name from the old Third Division North days, good luck to the lad and thanks for your reply Southey.

The mention of the old Third Division North . . . great times . . . great memories.

Your recollection of the above and ' Jack Stobbs ' coincides with a former player

both of the Owls and Millers another 'Jack' non other than Jack Shaw.

The year before Derek Dooley led the Div 2 scoring charts in 1951/52 with 46 goals,

well Jackie Shaw led the old Div 3 North 1950/51 with 37 goals, no mean achievement.

Jackie Shaw signed for Wednesday a couple of years later in the top flight.

That's probably your connection stpetre ?

We've just sent a 20 years old to Accrington on lone,if he's not good enough at 20 to be in the 1st team squad I,m afraid he will never be good enough.

'A pacey winger that likes to take on defenders', well, they'll soon coach that out of him !

Carlos appears to distrust youth players, there'd have been no harm in giving one or two of them like Hirst a run out against Chesterfield.

We don't seem to have had many players come through the ranks who've gone on to make very many appearances for us, but in recent(ish!) years as well as the keepers mentioned above and Liam Palmer we've had Tommy Spurr, Mark Beevers, Richard Wood, who've gone on to have long careers in pro football plus a fair few who've made the first team a handful of times and then largely disappeared (anyone remember Nathan Modest, Jon Shaw, Matt Tumulty?!)

Frankly there's not much point in having a youth set up if it's just producing youngsters who aren't good enough and then just get released, it's an area in which we really need to improve.

When you think that players like Rooney and Rashford were both playing premier league football at a young age it makes you wonder if Wednesday are being too cautious. I think league experience will be good for the young players, I would hate them to be sold without being given a proper chance in the first team.

With the pressure managers are under now (people wanted him sacked after one game!!!) can you blame him for not trying out young players.

Hirst Jnr will not figure until he signs a contract.
