Longcol   600 #5 Posted April 21, 2018 More than likely to be a crow. There's always plenty nesting down in Rivelin.
 Share this content via...
Guest   #6 Posted April 21, 2018 The only large-ish bird you're likely to see in this area that is the colour black is either a Carrion Crow or a Rook. There is a possibility that it could have been something like a Buzzard that appeared black because of the sunlight behind it causing you to see it in silhouette? fatrajah   10 #7 Posted April 21, 2018 Buzzards have become more common in recent years. They tend to circle in pairs high up with a flap-flap-glide sort of motion. Their cry is a sort of mewing noise.
 Share this content via...

feargal   21 #9 Posted April 21, 2018 We've definitely got a lot of crows in our garden at the moment. They have taken a shine to our chimney, and spend a lot of time pulling the pointing out
 Share this content via...
Nankypoo   10 #10 Posted April 21, 2018 (edited) Buzzards generally have light markings on the underwing. The last and most northerly raven I saw was at Carsington reservoir near Matlock about 2 years ago. Owethemnowt   10 #11 Posted April 21, 2018 Sounds like a fat wren to me silhouetted against the sky line and puffing its chest out having only frecently given upthe fags. Being on a diet of KFC, McD and kebabs plus the odd pizza accounts for its size.  Rare sighting though as since the sugar tax came in they are all slimming down.  Then again it could have been ...... a big blackbird.
