Searle's of Neepsend, Sheffield

Recommended Posts

Would Gilbert and Kate Searle of 154 Wallace Road, Parkwood Springs be related? They had a son, also called Gilbert. It was the family that George Orwell, known to them as Eric Blair, lodged with in March 1936 when he was researching "Road To Wigan Pier".

I'm trying to track these down - I have a family tree drawn out that a distant relative copied to me which includes the Searle's as ancestors to Frances but which doesn't include Gilbert or kate but I do know that Dad had relatives living on Wallace Road. I think that his aunt and uncle - Elsie and Denby - lived on that road but I can't recall Denby's surname.

Hello Moirahyde,

Do you think that Frank Searle, son, 10 (1901 census) is the same Frank Searle :

SEARLE, Frank Private. Duke of Wellington Regiment. OfNeepsend. Missing. (16 Jan 1915, Sheffield Daily Independent).

see page 105

Hi Brian,

Solldiers Died in the Great War.

Frank Searle.

Regimental No: 3/9485 Private.

Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Yorkshire).

Birth place: Neepsend, Sheffield.

Killed in Action, France & Flanders.

Died: 11-11-1914.

I can't find any attestation or service records for Frank. They were possibly part

of the burnt documents of WW2. Without these, it's impossible to tie him up to

any family members.

I had a look on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission site, but there does not

seem to be a burial for Frank.

You could try contacting them to see if they have any further information on Frank.

Sorry I can't be of more help,

Moira.

I have found a record that says that Frank Searle is 'Remembered With Honour' in the Bedford House cemetery https://www.cwgc.org/find-a-cemetery/cemetery/55502/BEDFORD%20HOUSE%20CEMETERY

I'm still trying to find a family connection between Gilbert and Kate Searle and the other Searles listed in this thread - any help appreciated.

Reporters! Sentiments expressed are fine but it sort of glosses over things and by dint of it appearing in a national news source these views tend to be seen as fact by anyone researching later. I know it's entertainment really but it grates a little.

I interviewed Kate Searle and another woman, whose name escapes me but she was a neighbour of the Searles at the time of Orwells visit, in connection with a university project I was doing in 1984.

Anyway, as you were and back on topic.
