Inclusive community in suburb 'will be strengthened by 'Tree Fight'

Recommended Posts

Apparently this isabout Nether Edge ..yet half the places mentioned aren't in Nether edge..

I do hope the tree campaigners dont spoil the felling of the trees especially on Sheldon Road, at least 70% which ought to have been felled years ago ..

Drive for inclusive community in Sheffield suburb 'will be strengthened by tree fight'

"When The Star last visited in December we highlighted the beauty and diversity of Nether Edge, as well as community efforts to tackle antisocial behaviour.

That community spirit is still strong and will be shown in full during the nine-day Nether Edge Festival, now in its third year, that takes place later this month. But a scan through our recent archives also tells a story of anger and activism. The peaceful, tree-lined streets of Nether Edge have this year become the scene of protests and surveillance as the ongoing dispute between the council and campaigners opposed to the city-wide felling and replacement programme has intensified. Many of those who have found themselves caught up in the quarrel had little or no history of dissension. But their commitment to their belief that healthy street trees are being cut down for profit has led some to places previously unthinkable - such as in front of a High Court judge.

Nether Edge and Sharrow councillor Alison Teal is perhaps one of the most prominent examples of this. The Green Party member had never been in trouble with the police, but in February found herself in the back of a police van after a peaceful protest under trees in Chippinghouse Road. She is also one of three campaigners who are now the named subjects of an injunction brought by her own council. The group fighting to save street trees in Nether Edge, says Coun Teal, is even more determined as a result of the court action. "Residents are trying everything they possibly can to try to keep as many trees as possible," she said.

think it's driven more people to get involved." Community spirit existed in the area before the felling began. It has been tested in streets where some are in favour and some are opposed, which have been 'ripped apart', according to Coun Teal."

I may be talking out of my backside here, but perhaps the community spirit is one of the reasons the houses are worth so much ?

I wonder if those in favour of tree felling, those who's houses and lives are blighted by trees far outgrown being suitable for the roadside, will be included in the inclusive community?

Probably not.

Having lived in Sheffield for over 70 years I would say there has never

been as much tree cover.

Few examples in the area I live

Morley st. Former allotments now virtually a wood

Edge of Bole hills.

now covered with trees.

Hag Hill

Has trees growing either sides of road

Rivelin Valley Rd

Now has virtually full cover over the road from Malin Bridge

to the S BEND.

Penistone rd area

Trees growing around Bassets, Trees Growing around industrial estate

new trees have been planted on centre reservation

Shirecliffe area around where ski slope was. None of these existed

when factories and slums dominated this area

Interesting reading regarding Sheffield woodlands

Well, if our street is anything to go by, then it's all the residents who haven't got a tree outside their own house that insist that the trees stay put outside other people's homes - including one family that have actually had the one removed outside their home with no complaints from them whatsoever!

The majority of properties are valued at a quarter of that value, as the terraces outnumber the larger properties.

The few in favour of felling have often moved in recently and seem to be surprised that trees block light and drop leaves.

I've only seen one poster who actually had good grounds for complaint. The rest (although there aren't many) who are in favour appear to be in favour due to some sort of anti liberal bias, where environmental concern is seen to be leftie, liberal thing.

Simply not true.

The majority of my neighbours objected to the felling of trees on our street.

I had one directly outside and probably 4 or 5 that were visible from my windows. Only 1 left now, all removed for no good reason.

Is it a daft suggestion to have a local referendum on the issue.

I see both sides claiming to be the voice of the majority, yet haven't seen any evidence to back up those claims.

Postal vote with a few choices on ballet paper?

Your street isn't anything to go by. Those with trees outside their houses are the most vociferous about keeping them on my road.
