Where was Clod Hall Stannington?

Recommended Posts

I have a birth certificate, dated 1837, for one of my ancestors. It gives the place of birth as Clod Hall Stannington. Does anybody know where and what this Clod Hall was?

Spoken to my 78-yr-old Mum (who has lived in Stannington virtually all her life) about this.

She seems to recall being told that it was not a 'Hall' as such, but a row of terraced cottages, "somewhere around the back of where Knowle Top Church is now".

This would suggest somewhere near to where the Infants School currently is. The School was built around 1910, so Clod Hall obviously pre-dates it by some time.

Hope this helps. However, you may get a more accurate response from Stannington Local History Group. Unfortunately, I don't have any contact details and I don't believe they have a web site.

Thanks for that darkoak, it fits in with census details I have for the Goodison family who are recorded as living at Knowle Top Stannington.

My Mum has recently passed away and remember her childhood days down at Clod Hall Lane. Her auntie Annie Grayson owned the cottages passed down to her by her late Father. Unfortunately in the 60's the cottages were taken on a compulsary purchase by Sheffield City Council. Throughout the years we have been told wonderful stories of happy times of many people who have lived there. For us it holds a special place in our hearts and would like to know about your ancestors.

I have been researching our family history and have found 3 generations who lived at Clod Hall. I wondered if you might know of any photographs of it still in existance at all?

Sorry I'm joining in to this discussion a bit late...but while I was scanning some old photo slides of my fathers, I found a photo of the view looking towards Loxley / Wisewood from Stannington from 1964. I think that Clod Hall is on the photo. It's a bit out of focus but also shows the field where Nook Lane Junior School was built. Please let me know if you are still interested in photographs.
