Perhaps change the ES app for the Astro app and try this as it explains how to do it with that. An old thread but it still may be useful.

Yep, tried the Astro app, and got to the same result where i am stuck on the failed password, although it did manage to get to the folders page within the server

Just done some DuckDuckGo'ing and found this:

http://www.talkandroid.com/9281-qnap-anounces-qmobile-android-app-for-mobile-nas-access/

I then went on the Play Store and found:

Qfile (QNAP)

Qmanager (QNAP)

Qmusic (QNAP)

Qremote (QNAP)

Qphoto (QNAP)

Qget (QNAP)

Vmobile (QNAP Security)

QmailClient (QNAP)

Qnotes (QNAP)

DJ2 Client (QNAP)

So different QNAP apps for different needs that the QNAP Server supports? ;)

Purely for testing, set a NO password, or a simple "1234" password.... and try it...

Yep tried that too, no luck,

I might just bite the bullet and upgrade to a newer 2 bay Nas, any recommendations welcome,

up to now i have found QNAP TS-251, 2 BAY INC drives at £389

Can you login from a different device and give permissions to allow your phone to connect?
