What are your favourite Northern Soul and Motown tracks

Recommended Posts

Wondering if there are any other Northern Soul and Motown fans on the forum. Do you go to any Northern Soul/Motwon nights, if so, where? And what are your favourite tracks?

I have hosted many a northern soul Motown night and the popular songs have already been mentioned, too many favorites to mention them all but i do have every single ever issued my Motown to pick from.

Apples Peaches Pumpkin Pie..Jay & The Techniques...

Ooh yes! I like that one. The problem I have with Northern Soul is finding tracks I don't like. That, and trying to remember track titles and performer's names. Just for starters:

I'm the one who loves you - Darrell Banks

I surrender - Eddie Holman

I can take care of myself - Gene Chandler

A little bit hurt - Julian Covay

Just say you're wanted - Gwen Owens

Seven days is too long - Chuck Wood

Monkey time - Major Lance

That driving beat - Willie Mitchell

Out on the floor - Dobie Gray

Do I love you - Frank Wilson

Needle in a haystack - the Velvettes

She blew a good thing - The Poets

Tighten up - Archie Bell and the Drells

I won't go on.

i love Mandre (have most of his stuff on lp and one on 12")

I love most of the (60's) girl groups, (though my faves are the Phil Spector wall of sound artistes) and bands like the Temptations etc.

WRT Northern soul tracks:-

"A Touch Of Velvet A Sting Of Brass" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AuVSRvTHjN8. (wah-wah! do do do do do dooom)

"Out On The Floor", by Dobie Gray

and "Ski-ing in the Snow" by Wigan's Ovation (dreadful group fab song!) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aIPdnXbpfVQ

I also like a bit of Gloria Jones' "Tainted Love", and Judy Street's "What", (Both of which were excellently covered by Soft Cell!)

A few of the ones i like have been mentioned, but for me the it has to be Aretha Franklin singing- I say a little prayer, and Respect, in fact most of her songs i like to hear because i just love her voice.

Another great favourite is Diana Ross and Marvin Gaye-You are everything.
