swarfendor437 Â Â 14 #13 Posted October 1, 2017 (edited) Before recommending people upgrade their computer's OS you should ensure the computer can be upgraded, after all you don't want the owner to wipe the hard drive and then install W10 only to discover particular hardware drivers are not available for the make & model of computer. Â Â For HP computers see the following link: Â https://support.hp.com/gb-en/document/c05195282 Â ... and just to reiterate, some applications can get wiped out when upgrading to Windows 10 and if specialist apps can create issues on licencing/relicencing - especially on apps that require internet connection to de-activate. And unless someone can advise otherwise, Windows 10 does not support Blue-Ray? I have Cyberlink Power2Go software (Version 10) on my Windows 7 drive which supports my Blue Ray drive so don't want to move to 10 for that reason. Â ---------- Post added 01-10-2017 at 11:46 ---------- Â Â Avoid that linux rubbish. Â Rubbish eh? OK, here's a real-life issue - Type-Faster Accessible - an open source .exe for Windows - fails to run properly on a machine runnng Windows 7 32-bit, On 64-bit version of same machine (Samsng P530) running Zorin 12.2 the Application runs smoother than on any version of Windows and unlike some other GNU/Linux DE's, shorcuts to programs running under Wine are now possible directly from the Desktop. Alan is now sorted and his computer seems to be working.
 Share this content via...
swarfendor437   14 #15 Posted October 1, 2017 Glad to hear the OP has got his system back how he wanted it - now would be a good time to create an image of the computer to an external drive using any of the following:  macreum reflect - https://www.macrium.com/reflectfree  easeus - https://www.easeus.com/backup-software/tb-free.html  redobackup - http://redobackup.org/  Acronis - https://www.acronis.com/en-gb/personal/computer-backup/  Makes for quicker restore once all the Windows updates have been applied - if having issues with installing updates please view this Microsoft page:  https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/10164/fix-windows-update-errors  Got me sorted when I had to update some notebooks at work that had not been used for some time. apelike   10 #17 Posted October 1, 2017 I did download Windows 10 but didn’t like it and thought I was stuck with it till reading a couple of days later that I could go back to 7.  Can I ask why you didn't like it as it very common that its the GUI that is not liked. To me its a mess but probably good if you have a touch screen, and seems designed just to integrate and give priority to its own apps and built in programs. I ended up installing classic shell to make it look and act like Win 7 otherwise I also would have gone back to 7.  Win 10 still has some bugs that need ironing out though. apelike   10 #24 Posted October 2, 2017 (edited) too cluttered,  You do realise that the left-hand box auto hides don't you, and you have over 50 desktop shortcuts hidden from view in the grab and I have only 2 which are shown..  I always turned off the 'recent' list and right-portion of the menu on Windows 7, and just had the list, like I do now on Win 10.  You can also do that in classic shell.  each to their own tho I guess... but I also don't like the thought of a 3rd party program doing those sorts of changes.  Why? Its extremely popular and has a very good rating and is also very customisable, hence its popularity.  ---------- Post added 02-10-2017 at 14:11 ----------  Looks very similar menu wise to my Zorin 12.2 desktop - standard layout but with an Obsidian Blue theme applied (with transparency): https://dl.opendesktop.org/api/files/download/id/1506869368/ElementaryInvertedDesktopShot.jpg   That's also how I had Zorin as well.  I rebuilt the PC, wiped the drives, put 10 on and have not got round to putting Zorin back yet.
