He had served time. And was then released, that's how it generally works, even for murderers, and he wasn't at that point a murderer.

 

Perhaps, or even clearly, the time wasn’t enough and he shouldn’t have been free to do this. I mean after all, it’s not like the Court, Prison and Probation service have a gleaming track record of rehabilitating offenders.

You want some sort of future crime imprisonment then? You'll need to get in touch with Tom Cruise I guess.

In Netherlands there is a sentence called "at disposal of the government". Even if you get a one week jail sentence for a minor crime when at disposal of government you can stay locked up for years as long as government thinks you are not sane or safe enough to walk free the way you are. That sentence is only given to nutters who never get it or are mentally insane.

We have the Mental Health Act and Hospital Orders.
