Parking on Botanical Road

Recommended Posts

Confused about whether or not it's permitted to park on the single yellow lines on Botanical road (on the left hand side as you go up). There are no signs on that side of the road, but I never see anyone parked there which is odd as it's such a busy area. Can anyone clarify please?

the parking situation on Clarkehouse Road is now ridiculous .  all double yellow lines .

there could at least have been some compromise and have one side for parking .

there could at least even be a time limit (3 or 4 hours maybe)  to prevent people parking all day to go to work

shame no one can think logically and instead it's all or nothing

For the most part, on there you can't have free flowing traffic, make space for cycle lanes  AND have the parking. Choices have to be made.

the traffic is hardly free flowing anyway ( in 'normal times'  ) .

and no parking on Clarkehouse means more traffic going round Trying to find somewhere ,  and more traffic

going past the hospital itself,  creating more pollution near the patients .

and if the council was that bothered about traffic anyway other than do everything possible to disrupt it ,

it could reopen some roads that are no entry or one way ,  put traffic lights ON junctions  eg  by the 'university' roundabout ..

not just the approaches .  and Stop traffic lights going to red at night IF no  one is around

and introduce one ways on some roads when it would make a lot of sense ..  e.g. Rutland Park ,  off Clarkehouse,

which would benefit greatly , or Park Lane (traffic could go up only)  and Broomgrove Road (traffic could be one way going down - at least for part of it) .   also, parts of Rushdale Road and Valley Road in S8 .

Sadly the council's only solutions are to block off roads completely ,  causing more chaos elsewhere and even more angry frustrated impatient drivers

The demand to leave cars on public roads in this area cannot ever be met.

Thankfully the majority people who come into the area to work study and attend appointments know this and use appropriate alternatives.

Those who still wander about seem unaware of the congestion they are causing  and nuisance to residents and business and other road users.

Why can't this dwindling number of drivers realise this and make it quicker, easier, safer and cleaner for everyone including themselves.

It is because of this kind of behaviour that the council has to step in and tell them what to do.

As mentioned in post #8, traffic levels and parking have been a significant problem in the area surrounding the hospitals for many years. The local people petitioned the council for a long time and as a result, some years back, the Broomhall and Broomhill traffic management projects and permit parking zones were implemented to better manage traffic and parking in those areas.

One way systems were consulted on in Broomhill and apart from one section, the local residents and businesses didn't want them at that time because of the extra time and inconvenience involved for the residents themselves. If I recall correctly, the residents of Rutland Park didn't want one as there was already an informal one way protocol in use at school times which was felt to work ok. You'll note that the council listened to and took account of the views of local people and prioritised them over people who were coming into the area.

One way systems are ok and they do regulate traffic but they often need traffic calming measures too because traffic can speed up. They also involve the people who live, work and do business in the area travelling further every time they want to go out or come in, which can be several times a day, so they are not always popular with local people. Closing roads is a very effective measure to stop through traffic where that is considered undesirable.

Allowing drivers to get from point A to point B in the most direct and fastest way isn't always desirable, especially if you live or work on the roads involved and they aren't particularly suitable for through traffic. The council has to balance the needs of everyone.

I think (it isn't clear from your post) you are asking for the Brook Hill roundabout to be signalled, with signals on the actual roundabout. The roundabout is too small for that, those arrangements only work effectively on bigger roundabouts like Park Square. That's why it hasn't been done.

Some traffic signals are set to sit at red on all approaches at night to slow down approaching drivers. Speed of vehicles at quiet times can be a problem as we have seen during lockdown. Sometimes signals always serve a particular approach even when no traffic is present because the vehicle detection equipment is damaged.

Blah blah blah....drivers etc.

If anybody was in any way bothered about anything other than own convenience they would use alternatives where possible and we would have less traffic and pollution.

You know that people live on those roads that you want to convert back to rat runs full of cars, pollution each morning.

There isn't any anymore - the botanical gardens is for those living on the surrounding streets only, unless you have a blue badge and use one of the internal bays, or can cycle. There was nothing wrong with the old arrangement for weekends before they got rid of it, usual sledgehammer response to the genuine parking issues in that area.

There is plenty of parking on the streets, car parks and buses on Ecclesall Road.

Car parks in Broomhill(2), Hallamshire and QPark .

Nearby bus stops in Broomhill include 6,10, 51, 52, 52a, 120(S and F)
