great idea but whos paying, hope its a grant ,with all these cuts, people losing there council jobs, grass cutting a disgrace despite extra cash, parks dept losing staff and knee deep in rubbish due to staff cuts, nothing wrong with sites like this but as long as its paid for by grants.

They were looking to get government and private money to do the entire thing I think?

This is just initial cash to get work underway and start the archaeological dig at the old castle.

Hopefully this development will provide incentive to regenerate other areas in the vicinity bringing them back to life.

Will they be wanting volunteers to help in the dig at castles?

William Moss and sons dug down thirty foot in 1960 while building the Castle Market.

They found a dead dogs skeleton and a rusty chastity belt.

Seen three rats playing on sidewalk old castle market site looking for food few days ago. They were coming and going from under the fence.

I have lived in Sheffield off and on for twenty years and never been down to Exchange Street - it's like another city entirely.

They should never have build the castle market.

First you say you never been to exchange St. Then you say its like another city and should have never build castle market while you have never seen it.

Exchange st. has just a little tobacco cigar lottery shop run by real sheffielders and it closes at 2 PM, closed sunday. A furniture recycle place that is often closed.

Sometimes walk from tram to hilton quay, it has new clean road surfaces and often not see one person out there, not even the homeless hang out there. It is a nice and quiet place, relaxing stress-free without being bombarded by commercial advertising.

Edit: still have two old classic historic phoneboxes there.

When the market was there you didn't have much view of the Old Town Hall. The report in The Star is totally misleading too, as the area was run down from the late 80s long, long before the market was demolished.

I expect there are many people in Sheffield who have never been down there, including "proper Sheffield" people born and bred. There's no reason to head down a side street with mostly derelict shops and a pub that looks like it hasn't opened in decades.

The tobacconists closes at 16:00 not 14:00, it used to close Thursday's and Sunday's, but according to google it is open Thursdays. it is surprising that it has survived the markets closure but on asking recently they are doing ok.
