Can I re-freeze food?

I am sure that I have read about not re-freezing, but if its frozen and kept in the fridge to thaw, eat half, and then re-freeze.

I did this last week, with no problems.

 

The freezing slows down the multiplication of bugs, so looks logical to me.

If you have thawed it, you should cook it before freezing again, is my understanding...
