Autumn Concerts 2011 from the University of Sheffield

Recommended Posts

Dear Sheffield Forum,

We're pleased to announce that this October the University of Sheffield's Autumn Concerts will be back with a bang!

We have a series of events under the heading Black History ICONS to celebrate Black History Month: Gary Crosby & Nu Civilisation Jazz Orchestra will be playing on Tuesday 11 October at Firth Hall, while on Tuesday 22 November Dante Quartet will be playing a programme of works composed or inspired by great black musicians in the classical idiom.

On Tuesday 18 October at the Upper Chapel Lucy Parham, one of Britain's finest pianists, will join with renowned actors Joanna David and Martin Jarvis to present Franz Liszt: Odyssey of Love. This unique portrait of the great composer combines readings from his correspondence with some of his most ecstatic and expressive piano music.

University of Sheffield Alumnus and award winning international soprano Elizabeth Watts will be playing at Firth Hall on Tuesday 15 November with harpsichordist Laurence Cummings. A programme of baroque music from Scarlatti and Handel is sure to make this an exceptional performance.

For world music fans, we're pleased to present Soriah, on Tuesday 25 October at Firth Hall, whose combination of traditional Tuvan throat singing and modern instrumentation is sure to thrill. You can also see Music from the Isle of Crete at Firth Hall on Tuesday 6 December, where George Zacharioudakis, Dimitris Sideris and John Papatzanis will bring us a Cretan repertoire which is both traditional and expansive.

And don't forget our Orchestras and Choirs, Rush-Hour Concerts, Free Lunchtime Concerts and Music in the Galleries!
