To celebrate our lovely historical building we will be opening up our 132 year-old ornate iron gates to everybody for Heritage Open Days 2018 on Friday 14th and Saturday 15th September.

All our events are free and open to everyone. Here's what we've got planned for the two days...

 

 

 

Exhibitions, Archives and Refreshments (Friday & Saturday 10am - 1pm)

• Stay a while in our Gallery to peruse The Montgomery archives on display, enjoy a cuppa and a scone from the Ladies in Lavender and experience our September art exhibition by Expressionist artist, Bryan John: http://www.bryanjohnartist.co.uk/cityscapes/4593407922

 

 

 

Friday 14th September (10am - 1pm)

 

 

•Delve Into Our History (10:45am)

 

Sheffield Newspapers will be presenting articles from the Sheffield Star's archives, followed by a short performance from pupils of Arbourthorne Primary School. From stories about our radical namesake, James Montgomery, to the Blitz years and onto the Great Fire in 1971, there is 200 years of the organisation's past to discover.

 

 

 

• Discover Radical 18th Century Sheffield - A Talk (12:15pm - 1pm)

 

Julia Armstrong from Sheffield Newspapers will be talking about the radical movement of 18th-century Sheffield; including the history of the city's radical press publications of the time - which supported many social reforms including the abolition of slavery - and the stories of how their writers and editors, including Joseph Gales and James Montgomery, came to be persecuted and imprisoned.

 

 

 

 

Saturday 15th September (10am - 2pm)

 

 

 

•Join A Theatre Tour (10:30 & 11:30)

 

Join a theatre tour and learn more about The Montgomery's history and how it went from a training school for the |Sunday School Union to a theatre and arts centre serving the local community, and all the bombs, fires and calamities in between. fits in with the heritage of the city, experience an open rehearsal from Carney Academy students and enjoy a shake up with musical extracts from 'Barry Manilow's Copacabana' performed by Splinters Theatre Group. There's no need to book, just turn up!

 

 

 

•Experience Local Musicality (from 12:15)

 

Sheffield Music Hub will take to The Montgomery stage for an open rehearsal, come and hear young musicians from across the city making music!
