Backup BT Yahoo emails

Recommended Posts

Does the POP download ignore all the emails that aren't in the inbox?

If so, I'd try configuring it with IMAP and see if it replicates the folder structure.

Failing that, you might have to move all the emails back into your inbox and download them using the client, then refile them... Maybe do it one folder at a time so that the filing is easier on the PC.

Bold. Sadly yes, it ignores everything bar whats in the inbox. Having been using simple web based mail for all these years ive not much idea about POP and IMAP so i struggled badly lol

But now all the important emails are (in a fashion) backed up.

Most had to be done individually which took me several hours because the process kept failing at the BT Yahoo side but now they are all done. Cheers loads for the help :)

I use a paid for yahoo account myself, and it all seems to be working fine at the moment.

They DO have a bad habit of changing things though and making them worse.

Yep, Mines the paid for email too which is why i was so miffed at BT changing so much and making so many things not work anymore. I rang their tech line to be told 'ah yes, i have bt email too and im unhappy at what they have done and sorry i cant help you becuae you only pay for email and not broadband'

Aftyer hearing that im quite proud of the fact i didnt eff or geoff once. Well maybe under my breath i said a few swears lol

The following link gives a step by step guide on migrating from Yahoo to Gmail

I have never tried it, so if you use it let us know how you get on.

This worked well. Thank you for that. It only gave me the emails in my inbox but now when i send an email to my old account (bt yahoo) it goes strait to my Gmail account now.

Thanks for this :)

I would do one of 2 things...

Either move the emails back to your inbox and download them all to your PC using POP3. Once you've done this, you could either set up a new email account and have both the new email account and your archive of messages from BT listed under 2 seperate headings in your mail client, or you could possibly merge the emails from your BT account with emails from your new account (as long as you're using a mail client rather than webmail).

Alternatively, I would simply set up a new email account, set this up in your mail client and have your BT email added as a secondary account as an IMAP account. This way you could use your new account as your primary account and access emails from your BT account in the same application as and when you need.

Moving the emails back to my inbox was a non starter as part of the reason i wanted to ditch BT is my emails became non-functional.

The moral of the story here is that customers should not regard their ISP as a storage facility for their emails. If they are important then they should be backed up by the owner of them. In this case, aside from downloading them in POP3 it would be easy enough to open an Outlook or GMail account and set it to pick up messages from the BT Yahoo one. All that needs to be done then is move all of the emails in folders to the Inbox and in time they will be picked up in the new account.

Having Outlook, Gmail or whatever pick up messages from the main email address mail box is a useful backup.

Out of interest why shouldnt i expect my paid email account to save emails for as long as i pay for it?

Were you paying for it separately, or was it included in your BB/Phone package?

Even if it was paid for on its own, it would be easy to argue that you are paying for the address, not for ongoing storage.

No it wouldn't, that would be a ridiculous argument for a paid for email service.

I was paying for it separately and have just now cancelled the DD. Dont see your point about storage at all if im honest.

It would be an argument that would win any legal claim though, virtually all email services have a clause in the agreement that does not guarantee storage.

Nobody is talking legal claims and you would only argue that if you were petty, small minded and out to cause a row with a stranger because your life is so empty. :)

At least you managed to retrieve your emails so all has ended well. Whatever you feel, or believe about storage of these it is clear that some back up arrangement is the best option. As has been mentioned, there are several ways to do this so now you have your new set up it might be worth considering managing this in a way that suits you.

If you would like them available at all times i.e. without an Internet connection then exporting them to a folder on your computer at the end of each month could be the way forward. Unfortunately exporting them doesn't always preserve the subject so drag and drop can be more useful. Some email clients don't have this function, Thunderbird and MacMail being two but Windows Live Mail does so it is very easy to back up - takes a minute or two.

I may well look up the standard BT email contract to check, because that sounds ludicrous. An email address is of no use if emails are not guaranteed to be stored at least until you pick them up.

The terms and conditions of BT Yahoo Mail are here. Timeh does not mention if he was paying for their Premium Mail but if not, this is relevant: 'If you do not pay the charges for Premium Mail we reserve the right to end your Service without notice.' It is under 'Paying for the Service'. That alone brings the storage argument into perspective.

From the BT forum here: You don't pay for BTMail. It is a free "Value Added Service" that you get when you sign up for BT Broadband. Ofcom have also agreed that it is a free, not paid for service. You also agreed to have adverts when you accepted the Terms and Conditions when you signed up to BT Broadband.

See para 35 http://www.productsandservices.bt.com/consumer/terms/value-added-service.html#service_email

Further information here.

A free email service such as Gmail, Gmx, Outlook and Zoho is probably safer and more convenient than one linked to an ISP.

He did specifically say that he was paying for email, that it was not the email included with the broadband.

Imap clients are often not downloaded entirely. This is a reason why backing them through Outlook/Thunderbird doesn’t turn out to be successful every time. Try out some good archiving tool like Mail Backup X. This tool can archive the emails from the mail account directly to offline access mode.
