Poor Theresa May

Recommended Posts

the so-called 'special relationship' between the US and the UK is a myth. It's one-way traffic all coming from the British side. The only people who recognise the phrase meaning a relationship between Britain and the USA, are British people. Americans don't recognise the phrase at all. Even educated Americans, if you were to ask them who their 'special relationship' regarding a foreign ally is with, you'd just get a blank stare, as the phrase is totally unknown in the United States - unlike in Britain.

As far as most Americans are concerned, there is no 'special relationship' - with anybody.

If you were to press them to come up with a foreign country with whom the United States has a'special relationship', they'd struggle to comprehend what you meant, but hardly anybody would mention Britain. A lot more would say Canada, and with good reason.

I understand what your saying blake, but even the yanks must have noticed something special between regan thatcher bush blair. etc.

As far as the latter is concerned we are spineless and will do whatever the president wants - no questions asked. We also make a convenient scape goat. Theresa May will no doubt fulfill a similar role as she pimps out UK plc to stave off the oncoming economic disaster.

US and UK are firm historic allies but ultimately to the USA the UK is just another European country. Although it is one of the largest and will be in the future the very largest, so it is more important than most just from just that point of view.

there's not much sentimental attachment. Unlike with Australia and New Zealand, only a quite small minority of the inhabitants of the USA have any ancestral connection with the British Isles at all.

it's a good relationship and one which both countries do and should value, but that ubiquitous phrase 'special relationship', is all coming from the British side. It's a phrase that has widespread parlance here, but is totally unknown over there. It's a lot more of a special relationship to Britain, than it is an especially special relationship to the USA.

American politicians have learned how widespread the special relationship phrase is in Britain, and trot it out on foreign visits to humour us, but ultimately they don't really mean it.

Well, i wonder how long Theresa May is going to drag it out before they finally give her the boot, this is like a slow car crash, and as every day goes on it weakens our hand in europe, she doesnt have the backing of her own party, so how can she even contemplate negotiating in europe, its getting embarrasing now.
