Joanl   12 #14 Posted July 17, 2012 When I read through some of the posts on here, I'm glad I'm not still there now that I AM getting on a bit and I'm glad that my parents are no longer there either. They both died some 30 years ago and would have been in their 90's now.....They wouldn't have been popular would they.
 Share this content via...

On the whole as a country though I feel we treat our elderly, with nothing but disdain, which is very sad.
 Share this content via...

poppins   10 #17 Posted July 17, 2012 Devil's advocate more here.. why should reaching a particular age grant respect on someone...?  Put in more working hours than others, maybe even been in a war or two, also having lived long enough to read how people like you think among other things you wouldn't agree with, so why bother. Bypassblade   10 #18 Posted July 17, 2012 Devil's advocate more here.. why should reaching a particular age grant respect on someone...?  It's how I feel; how would you feel if it were your parents/grandparents, the age I grew up in, we were brought up to respect our elders. I have carried forward that mantra all my life, with old age comes respect.  People are dragged up now days; with no respect for anyone, that's why its getting like a sewer in this country. Joanl   12 #20 Posted July 17, 2012 Devil's advocate more here.. why should reaching a particular age grant respect on someone...?  Because my parents taught me to respect everyone older that myself who were maybe not as fit or mentally agile as me and that I should never mock the afflicted.......I however have taken that one step further and will show respect for everyone unless and until they show me that that don't deserve my respect.................regardless of age. Forumosaurus   10 #23 Posted July 17, 2012 It depends what you want as an old person. If you want peace and quiet and not much interaction, move to the countryside.  If you want to try and keep active and socialise and be involved in the world, stay in Sheffield.  I think a lot of the grannies in Sheffield would get dementia if they couldn't have they daily trip to the market or greggs or Marks and Spencer or the charity shop or Jack Fultons.
