John Simpson   10 #1 Posted June 23, 2010 Can anyone recall the Sunderland Social Club in the City.My aunt Edith Alibone worked there as a cleaner in the early 70s.It was a bit of a back street affair but I remember a good atmosphere while playing dominoes there. Also a pub called the Vine down in the City off the moor. Fareast   10 #2 Posted June 23, 2010 ' The Sunderland Social Club ' was on the corner of Cemetery Road and Sunderland Street [ about halfway up Cemetery Road ]. The Vine was very near to it on another corner. The S.S. was jokingly called the ' Silver Slipper ' by its varied clientele. By ' varied ', I really mean ' varied '. I haven 't time right now to describe it all, but, no doubt, some Sheffield Forummers will oblige. It was probably, in its hayday, the most dangerous place in Sheffield to tread on someone 's toe, accidently-------or to say anything remotely out of turn !! There was always a mad rush to get in there between 2 and 3 p.m as the pubs closed at 3 p.m but ' The Slipper ' was usually open until 5.30 p.m. when the pubs re-opened. I wouldn 't imagine that 1 in a 100 regulars were legit members of any club but the Old Bill didn 't mind as they often picked people up there....and NOT for a cozy chat !
