The Catholic church is very different to Cof E in some respects: the fact that priests can't marry and have to remain celibate, that they are held in such high regard particularly by poor parishioners to the point where they can (and do) get away with things like child abuse. I don't think it's particularly relevent or helpful to compare the two.

 

We are simply talking about an important and respected man who has had something very important to say about the plight of the poor in this country.

I don't think it is political in that he is trying to take sides, he's just speaking out about the inequality and injustice that's under our nose.

 

If it was a situation in another country that he was talking about, we would'nt see him as some meddling Leftie, but as a concerned humanitarian.

In a speech to the TUC Congress in Manchester earlier this week, Justin Welby criticised firms like Amazon for paying "almost nothing" in taxes, and branded the so-called gig economy and zero-hours contracts as "the reincarnation of an ancient evil".

 

However, the Church has now confirmed the online retail giant is one of its 20 biggest investments worldwide and at least two of its cathedrals are advertising zero-hours contract jobs.

So the Archbishop slammed the likes of Amazon for their tax avoidance. Now I'm the first to say yes they should pay but to be lambasted by a senior member of an organisation that's pays ZERO tax is utterly ridiculous.

 

Yes the HMRC should close the loopholes but it should include making religious organisations pay too.

The CoE are keeping their Amazon shares. I guess they don't want to hit those profits.

I like Welby's defence of one minute condemning Amazon then defending the fact that the CoE are one of their major UK shareholders by saying that the CoE can work to change Amazon's culture from the inside BY being a shareholder.

Reminds me of the Labour class warriors such as Blunkett, Caborn & Prescott, to name but a few who now reside in the House of Lords.

Apparently the church has shares in Amazon according to the BBC news just now.

Many people have share portfolios whithout a clue what they've invested, often via mixed investment funds.

I doubt the Archbishop of Canterbury, sits down and picks them out himself, I'm sure he has accountants to do that. Nevertheless it's an embarrassing oversight.

But once again people are in danger of shooting the messenger rather than listening to the message. Here is a man fighting the corner of ordinary people like you and me. We should support him.
