Like Oxford, should Sheffield ban all non electric vehicles?

Recommended Posts

I know it's a bit of troll thread but.......

No, but mainly because of the difference between the cities. Oxford is more compact for starters and Sheffield has heavier industries and more manufacturing dotted around it when compared with oxford. You'd have to hope there is a big uptake in electric commercial vehicles to make it remotely feasible.

The OP has failed to provide a link on the Oxford story. Not surprising as a few news stories are totally inaccurate.

Its something like SIX streets, starting in 2020. And expanding a few more at a time every few years. Its no worse than a bus gate or limited access hours in city centres.

what a stupid idea. I loath the people who come up with these ideas. They don't live in the real world. I think they just get a lightbulb moment. They wouldnt be able to provide the infrastructure for a start.

its like trying to ban diesel cars. People who commute a fair distance to and from work will use diesel as its more economical than petrol if they travel long distances.

And then there is the constant trying to herd the car user onto public transport. Unfortunately the public transport system is not fit for purpose and hasn't been for years.

But unlike Oxford where its only a city centre exclusion wouldn't it be brave if a 4 mile exclusion zone was introduced?

From hillsbough, to woodseats, to halfway to attercliffe

All non electric vehicles banned

And this would also include hybrid cars, banned too.

This would make a bold statement to the rest of the world that sheffield takes its environmental responsibility seriously.

And that poor health will not be passed onto the next generation from the current generation

Are we to ban non-electric trains as well as non-electric cars, vans, lorries and buses?

How are we to go on if people decided to revert back to using horses and bullocks to provide local transport? I think you may then be objecting to a different pollution?

Not really. There's a road running through the main street in Preston, like a smaller version of The Moor. They banned vehicles on it during the day to reduce car emissions affecting pedestrians and making it a generally nicer place.

Aside from a few moaners who ignored the signs and got tickets its been much better.

Electric cars only reduce local air pollution. Eventually we may have enough renewable power to effectively reduce the carbon produced in both their use and production.

We need to fundamentally rethink the way we choose to get around which needs to be either via public transport or under our own steam. Sheffield has done pretty poorly for the introduction of cycling infrastructure while other cities have forged ahead on this. However cars are powered there simply isnt enough road space to put all these private vehicles. Cycles use a fraction of the space while having the side effect of getting those who use them fitter and healthier.

Banning non diesel vehicles from the City Centre would probably boost usage of the Supertram park and ride facilities but other than that...

And the people that come up with these ideas usually have the funds to be able to purchase an electric car.

Talking long term the government has put in place a national deadline for phasing out diesel and petrol cars.

This is of course the same government that cancelled rail electrification...

This.

They want to stop the sale of new IC engined cars but offer nothing to take their place.

We'll end up like Cuba at this rate with everyone depending on dwindling numbers of ever ageing vehicles.
