Sheffield Beer & Cider Festival 2017

Recommended Posts

Still nothing remotely resembling the sweet dark brew that refreshes "Jakeys" throughout Scotland.

And for that we can all be truly thankful.

I prefer the stemmed glasses to the standard half glass. Last year they had a choice of a stemmed half or a straight pint pot. In fact, my 2016 glass broke in the dishwasher last week, so I'm ready for a new one

The best practice is to have a strong, straight-sided, heavy-based HALF pint glass...as at Barrow Hill. Very few if any weak points, unlike the goblets. One of the BH glasses fell out of a high kitchen cupboard recently and just bounced!

Surely any self-respecting beer geek will have an array of suitable, tailored receptacles? I may even carry an extra weisse 1 litre glass in case of extreme thirst.

Only becomes an issue if you drop the glass...

Sweet, dark frothy beers in flimsy plastic glasses. Delicious and no breakages.

If you were "glassed" all you got was wet!

Really looking forward to this. I'll be there at the start Wednesday and have taken the day off work on Thursday to hit the afternoon session.

I did the same last year and really enjoyed the chilled, not packed atmosphere of the Thursday afternoon.

Here is all the festival information and how it works for those that haven't been before..

The venue is Kelham Island Industrial Museum, off Alma Street, S3 8RY. Nearest tram stop is Shalesmoor (Blue or Yellow route), nearest bus stops are Nursery Street (routes 3, 3a, 7 and 8 ) or Gibralter Street (routes 31, 57, 81, 82, 85 and 86). Note the museum car park will be closed on festival days.

Website - http://www.steelcitybeerfestival.co.uk.

At the gate you pay your entry fee and glass deposit. Entry prices vary by session (See below). The festival glass costs £2 which you keep hold of to drink out of for the duration of your visit then you can either hand it back and claim the deposit back as you leave or keep the glass as a souvenier. There is a choice of traditional pint glasses or fancy stemmed half pint glasses. All have the festival logo and a sponsors logo and all also have a third pint line for those wanting to try smaller samples. The pint glasses also have a half pint line so you aren't forced to drink pints!

If you need to rinse your glass out for the next drink you can ask at the Millowners Arms bar, do it yourself at the drinking water stations by the cider bars, do it yourself using the sinks in the indoor toilets are alternatively visit the glass return stand and exchange it for a clean one.

Beer and cider is paid for by tokens (basically paper money) you buy from the token desks dotted around the site. Beer & Cider available in third, half and pint measures. Food vendors accept cash.

Note we cannot accept card payments at the festival, the nearest cash machine is at Tesco Express at the end of Alma Street.

The festival layout is across the following areas:

Upper Hall (access via footbridge): Cask beers - breweries A-K, Cider & Perry, International bottled and canned beers, music stage, stalls.

Marquee: Cask beers - breweries L-Z, Cider & Perry, International bottled and canned beers, games, stalls.

Millowners Arms: Bradfield Brewery bar

Brearley Room: Keykeg beers

Courtyard: Street food vendors, toilets

Engine Room: River Don Beam Engine (see programme for demonstration times).

Choosing your drinks: The beers and ciders we plan on having available are listed in the programme (printed copies are available for 50p each) and will soon be on the festival website. A4 cask end labels will be displayed on all the cask and keykeg beers plus all the ciders and perries with the name, strength, price and brief description. The bottle bar will have a list on the bar. If unsure feel free to ask the bar staff who are all volunteers there to share their passion for beer or cider and will be happy to make suggestions based on your taste.

VEGAN & GLUTEN FREE OPTIONS - will be available, check the festival website for details.

Cask Beer, Bottled/Canned beer & Cider availability: all drinks will go on sale, subject to cellar team quality control, at opening time on Wednesday. Once sold out they are sold out - therefore at the end of the week a reduced range will be available but we still aim to have a reasonable choice throughout. However if you really want to try specific beers/ciders from the list I reccommend coming on Wed/Thur.

Venue capacity: There are no advance tickets or session change times, admission is first come first served. Once the venue's capacity is reached it will be one in one out on the gate and at busy times such as Friday night and Saturday afternoon there may be a wait time - therefore it is advisable to get down early if you can!

Opening hours, admission costs and entertainment:

Wednesday 18th October: Open 5pm-11pm. Free entry. Opening ceremony with a representative of festival charity and judging of the champion beer. (No music tonight).

Thursday 19th October: Open midday-11pm. Free entry before 5pm. After 5pm entry is £2 (free for CAMRA members). Live music from 8pm - Do$ch.

Friday 20th October: Open midday-11pm. Entry £3 for 5pm, £5 after (£1/£2 for CAMRA members). Live music from 5pm with J&M Select, The Beat Merchants and Highway Child.

Saturday 21st October: Open midday to 10pm. Entry £3 (£1 for CAMRA members). Live music from 2pm to 9pm with Loxley Silver Band, J&M Select and Vegas 6. Charity pub quiz in marquee at 4pm.

Sunshine Pies - Hot and cold pies (in the upper gallery hall)

CHARITY

There will be collection buckets around the festival for Weston Park Hospital. You may wish to consider donating unspent beer tokens to the charity instead of claiming the refund. The proceeds from the sale of quiz sheets on Saturday will also go to the charity.

CAMRA - the Campaign for Real Ale

The festival is organised by volunteers from the Sheffield & District branch of CAMRA. The national organisation was founded in 1971 to promote the availability and appreciation of traditional good quality real ale and beer consumer rights. The campaign has adapted over the years and these days the issues are more about supporting community pubs, getting a fair deal on tax and other issues that threaten the ability to enjoy good beer in a good pub. There is also a social side of CAMRA with events organised including brewery tours, guided pub crawls and more. Overall it is an organisation for anyone that loves beer and pubs!

If you are already a CAMRA member you will get discounted entry into the beer festival, if you aren't but are interested in joining there will be a membership stand at the festival, come say hello, sign up and we may even sort you out with a free pint! More about membership can be found at http://www.camra.org.uk/joinus.

Gumball was excellent, was looking forward to the bearded lady, but it was all gone when I went on Friday night. Other standouts for me were the Brew By Numbers coffee porter, the Black Iris Black, Strap & Bourbon, the Alpha State pale that I cant remember the name of, and the Sawa Sawa coffee sour, which shouldnt have worked but did. Didnt spend much time in the cask area, cant stand cask beer served on gravity.
