Bus service changes in Sheffield - September 2017

Recommended Posts

If Andy C could explain the 85 route to me I would be very grateful.

On this website http://www.travelsouthyorkshire.com it say it goes from Sheffield Interchange to High Green, It does not not mention Chapeltown at all. I rung traveline up on 01709515151 and they assured me that the 85 does not travel through Chapeltown.

On this website https://www.firstgroup.com/south-yorkshire it says it goes from Sheffield Interchange to Thorpe Hesley and it says it goes through Chapeltown. I rung First up and they say it does go through Chapeltown but are not sure of the roads it travels on around Chapepeltown and High Green.

I have seen First 85 busses coming up Lound side from Chapeltown but traveline seem to think i must be seeing things. It is very confusing for me and a lot of people around the Chapeltown/High Green area.

You can download the network map here: http://www.travelsouthyorkshire.com/northsheffieldbusnetworkmap/

The 85 doesn't go to Chapeltown, it goes to High Green via Grenoside., however when it gets to High Green the bus switches onto service 136 and continues via Chapeltown and Thorpe Hesley to Rotherham. That is explained on the timetable change page at http://www.travelsouthyorkshire.com/servicechanges/. If you are4 seeing an 85 bus in Chapeltown I would suggest the driver isn't switching his/her destination display correctly.

On another note, in some areas people have more than one operator to choose from, don't forget the Travelmaster range of tickets that work on all buses with options including trams and train also available - these include Citybus, Cidywide, Connect, Connect+ and Getabout.

Details are now available on the new Travelmaster website - http://www.sytravelmaster.com.

Since changing the 85 times, it's now actually quicker for me to walk from town to Hillsborough and back for work , that includes all other alternative bus. How is that ever right?

Could be worse. The 201 change in the morning (8.25 to 8.29) basically means I'm now always late for work (as a one per hour service, coming from a train, just getting the earlier one doesn't work.)

So thanks to the transport people, will now probably have to look for a new job.

The earlier bus still runs to Barnsley, it commences from Ecclesfield rather than Sheffield City Centre, presumably due to not enough passengers using it from Sheffield for that section to be viable. There is however a connection available from Sheffield to Ecclesfield on route 1a.

nb - already a thread on this theme here: https://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=1518954

Going to be honest, the change from the 265 to the 2 is one of the best things that's happened in recent years for me. The old pre-7am bus into Barnsley centre used to JUST miss the train connection into Sheffield resulting in a half-hour wait. Not it runs 6 mins earlier it connects great. Plus, if I'm lazy and decide to catch the bus in, it runs earlier back into Sheffield too, and all the way up Arundel Gate now so goes past where I work, meaning I get into work earlier whichever way I come. I am also looking forward to being able to get a bus (almost) door to door from home to the Beer Engine or Dev Cat now it loops around the market. And a good friend of mine who often leaves Beer Central with a rusksack full is delighted that he won't have to lug it to the bus station any more.

Compare that to the last big chance when Stagecoach dropped all the non-peak services to TM Travel, making a weekly/monthly pass no longer viable for many people and doubling what they had to pay to travel.

However, I do understand these changes won't suit everyone - especially those on or over the Derbyshire border. But as Andy says - use them or lose them. For those complaining that their last bus back is before 11, spare a thought for those of us who have to cope with before 10!

Just school buses 681, 736 and 779.

Newman Road/Wincobank Avenue has route 3 and Bellhouse Road has 75/76.

One day, the bus operators will realise the effect of this constant (4 times a year) tweaking of services.

Potential passengers cannot keep track and inexorably stop using the services.

To summarise in one sentence:

Services are to become worse, expect a fare rise within 3 months.

Isn't that the number 2.....

On a serious note what about the people that also need to get to the Sports Centre and Ncsem NHS facility behind it. But more importantly Haythorne Place Nursing Home. Surely the local Councillor for the area Mr Price can pull some strings and get the service back

Who ever tweaks these times should try using them for a month to get from a to b. Not everyone works 9 to 5.

If the service was withdrawn due to ticket sales being too low to cover costs and the local authority not deeming it socially necessary enough to subsidise then presumably such people are few in numbers.
