New Retail Quarter in the City Centre

Recommended Posts

I agree in a way. But I do think they're getting better at it (slowly). You have to remember that the NRQ needs to be built before they can start advertising it to people to come see it. :P

I'm always surprised by the amount of tourist's that DO come to Sheffield. Whenever I go to town, there's always people taking pictures and acting touristy.

Irrespective of being upmarket I think the NRQ is simply an overdue project to give Sheffield city centre a modern and compact shopping centre commensurate with a city of its size.

How many times must developers and councillers fall flat on there arse. I see yet another failure. Sheffield needs more higher paying jobs to facilitate these shops. The economy is ****.

Somehow I reckon the developers, who are putting millions of pounds of private money into the NRQ and will therefore be answerable to their shareholders if the project fails, will have done their research and financial projections and concluded that they're on a winner.

The economy of Sheffield is plenty big enough to support the NRQ - but not big enough to be a Leeds or Manchester.

One of the main problems, as someone mentioned above, is that Meadowhall and to a lesser degree, the Markets, are in areas that most people from the South of the City don't really want to go to. Meadowhall was wonderful when it first opened, now it's rammed with 'shoppers' and the experience is not enjoyable.

We can be in Chesterfield quicker than we can get to Meadowhall, and the present Market is in a terrible area, I don't know anyone who goes there unless they've despaired of obtaining an item anywhere else, and it's a last hope.

The NRQ will be fabulous, I just hope I'm still around to enjoy shopping there!

But we're never going to be a Manchester or Leeds - let's keep a realistic perspective

As Peter Stringfellow said on the news the other morning ... in Sheffield it used to be not the done thing to flaunt your money, there's a different sort of money about these days, and they aren't ashamed to show it!

I think one of the reasons that we may never again achieve a national profile like Manchester or Leeds, is the attitude from people like yourself, no offence :D

We know that journalists scrutinise fora for trends and attitudes, when they encounter negativity like this on the local forum, what are they supposed to make of it .... most people endorse their towns and cities, many people in Sheffield do nothing but try to bring everyone down with their pessimism. I find these negative, critical attitudes a real turn off, they make one feel that nothing is worth attempting as people will only moan on endlessly, no matter what.

You're part of the problem we have, try being part of the solution instead. You might even find you enjoy being positive for a change.

I think you're being a bit hard on Longcol: he is being positive, without getting carried away.

I didn't just mean him - sorry Longcol, if you thought I was just picking on you only :)

No probs - I'm not being negative about Sheffield - we just have to set realistic expectations for the city.

It's quite pleasant to note on this thread (and the Harvey Nics one) we haven't yet had anyone using the trite arguement that we are the fourth or fifth biggest city in the country and therefore should have the shopping to match - without noting we haven't the size of conurbation / "hinterland" nor the wealth to be in the same league as Manchester or Leeds - or perhaps some of the regional centres like Bristol & Norwich. Aiming to be in the top fifteen would be about right.

I maintain there's plenty of money here, people just don't like spending it :hihi:

I will agree that people who choose to live or work in Leeds, probably do have more disposable income and more taste and sophistication ... but you could hardly say that about Manchester or some of the other places you mention.

C'mon Ruby - something like 6 million people live within 30 miles of Manchester centre - and that includes some very wealthy areas in the "Cheshire stockbroker belt" - the equivalent of five or six Sheffield Hallam constituencies in terms of population and spending power. Both Bristol and Norwich are regional centres that pull people in from large (think an hours drive away) , generally well off, areas. The pull of Sheffield centre hardly extends beyond the city boundaries - although Meadowhall does attract people from a lot further afield.

So why did they get the casino? The reason given was that they were in dire need of regeneration and the area was one of the poorest in the region ... I'm not saying I wanted a super casino here, but I thought Blackpool would hvae been the best place for it, and in more need of the revenue than Manchester. Obviously that was a wrong assumption.

I'm also pretty sure that Cheshire was never even mentioned in the recent news item top ten of rich areas in the UK, but I'll stand corrected, if so. Of course, it was on a Yorkshire segment, why would they mention t'other side of Pennines :)

I'm sorry to see that in spite of my reasoning why we should be upbeat about our area to outsiders, you're still determined to prove everywhere else is better than here

I've said this before but i wonder why those who don't like the city move somewhere else? If i disliked the place so much i'd up sticks and move to the utopia of choice.

I did - to the utopia of the Isle of Wight!
